Twin webers on an everyday capri
Hi folks,
Wanted some input on advice I've had from my local garage who've been great so far I might add.
2.0 pinto running twin webers, used as an everyday car. Just had to have them tuned as they were running rich and out of sync.
They recommended me swapping them out for just a single weber carb as it'll be better for what I'm using it for and I won't run the risk of bore wash etc.
They've offered to buy the twin webers off me as they specialise in classic and performance cars. Is this good advice or am I being had

Depends on your power needs ,a 32/36 dgav is good for 150hp , stock is about 105hp on a good one . If your dcoe's are set up properly there wont be any bore wash , this is when liquid ( not vapourised properly ) fuel finds its way into the engine. I dont believe that under probly 130-140hp a set of dcoe's are going to give much more in peak power and they might not add anything at all in the way of useful low end torque. Dcoe's have replaceable venturies and if you fitted 32mm venturies you would likely duplicate the 32/36 dgav characteristics ,but if you fitted 38mm venturies your bottom end would suffer and if your not running a cam suited to hi end power you probly wont gain anything up top. Fitting a set of poorly suited dcoe's will put a bit of strain on the fuel pump and run poorly . No point whatsoever fitting dcoe's to a stock or near stock motor.
My capri 2l motor runs standard cam , about 10:1 comp ratio ,stock distributor with electronic module . Cam is advanced a bit from stock , gives better low to mid range power , pulls like a school boy ( 5th gear overtaking .....4th is better but it will do it ) and I easily get 40mpg. If the webers are in good nick and are genuine ....keep them . The mechinic will know that good genuine dcoe' are not that thick on the ground , not saying he is trying to diddle you ...depends what he is offering .
Fordoholic nick here has the good road cam and dcoe's on his ( very well presented ) Capri and has recently had it professionally tuned at a well regarded establishment , Im sure if you search his posts you will see the results , he may even chime in .

Thats the crux of the matter. The guy is probably right that the twin set up is overkill, but I bet he knows he will be able to flip them to a waiting project somewhere.
This does leave you wondering though whether you really need your carbs, so I would say fit a fast road cam and then you KNOW you need to keep the carbs.

Ate they 40s or 45s? Either way sounds like total bollox. Keep them. Changing back to an original 32/36, you'll get better mpg, but sacrifice lots of power in that plenum chamber and 90 degree bend, and you'll have to deal with the 'step' of the second choke opening, not exactly a smooth transition.
As for bore wash, if the carbs are set up right, you won't get any. Even if they do, I've had mine on for 10 years and they were massively overfueling for about two years, never did my engine any harm.
By 'what you are using the car for', I guess that means getting in it and driving around with a mixture if air and petrol going into the cylinders. The twin Webers do that perfectly.
A standard 32/36 would be a massive step backwards. Do not do it.

Yes there is. I've been in one. Plus if he wants to do anything further to it, the original carb will be a massive restraint in the system.
And 150 out of a 32/36?! 130 at a push, maybe.

Feel I didn't add the necessary adulation for running a Capri as an everyday driver. Good one.

Not that I've been lucky enough to get to the stage of fitting DCOEs yet, but I have a 32/36 on both the 1.6 and 2.0 and use them both daily.
They are fast enough to get about and do what's needed, and are easier to set up as you don't have to worry about balancing them etc. but I have no doubt that the extra oomph is much more fun to use when you fancy it and if it runs as it should now then leave it as is and enjoy the smiles rather than miles per gallon!

Well I have to consede that Tom , to quote Vizard, " given all the carburetion it can use, a standard 2L engine would produce 12-14 more hp" ,which is about what you might get by doing some mods to the dgav and manifold .
