1.6 Laser fuel filter & hose
Hi guys,
New to the page & loving the tips & tricks I've read in the forum!
I've recently started the job of replacing & 'upgrading' the current fuel hose line in its entirety & fuel filter itself as this looks slightly worse for wear.
My first question is whats the best hose to use (I'm replacing from tank to engine so full length) for good, constant pressure?
Secondly are there any recommendations out there for better fuel filters than the original, plastic housing ones? As this seems a bit flimsy when it comes to the connecting points for the hose.
Any other recommendations & ideas please let me know, the more the merrier - I'm a young'un when it comes to the realm of classic cars!
Cheers,
Archer

Welcome to the page!
Do you mean this type of fuel filter?
ebay.co.uk/itm/224459316894?hash=item3442d15e9e:g:29MAAOSwZrxffMyC
I used to have one of these on mine which did the job, just had a jubilee clip on each end to make sure the hoses didn't pop off. I've since taken mine off entirely and have just kept an occasional eye on the state of the fuel getting into the carb to make sure it's not filled with crud and if you're fitting a whole new tank and pipes I'd be tempted to do the same thing as there's not going to be any stuff floating around in there??
Not sure what to recommend on pipes though I'm afraid but would be interested to hear what people have used as I'm sure mine will need doing with all this E10 lark
Cheers
Danny

Welcome to the forum and it's great that you are contributing!
I think fuel hoses need to be SAE J30 R6 to withstand the eroding effects of ethanol.
This is a common type of pipe and you should be able to purchase some at your local motor factors.
Andrew.

If you want the really pedantic answer: originally there was no filter in the line from the pump to the carb at all.
There's a mesh filter over the pickup in the tank and a finer one within the pump housing. Finally there's a really fine plastic one under the brass nut on the carb where the fuel line goes in (32/36DGAV and 38DGAS at least). The carb one is renowned for collapsing/blocking, causing fuel starvation issues. You may well find it's been removed already?
Most people retro-fitted the clear in-line filters to:
a. Give an easy view that fuel is pumping to the carb.
b. Give an easy view of the cleanliness of the fuel.
c. Give additional filtration of the fuel.
d. Make up for the fact they'd already removed the carb filter.

Is it R6? I thought R9 was the way to go now. Its what I've used anyway.

Re: 1.6 Laser fuel filter & hose
You're right, Peter. J9 is now the standard setter as it's less permeable than R6.
I have read reports of fuel hose imported from the far east being stamped as R9, but not being of the required standard. It might be a good idea to steer clear of cheap Ebay suppliers and instead buy from a trusted source.

Re: 1.6 Laser fuel filter & hose
I have just been reading about fuel lines and the idea is to use as much plastic ,steel ,copper or kunifer, and the rubber ( r9 ) should only be used for joining the ends . Im pretty sure my crapi has steel lines.....might be plastic ... Cant remember

Thanks for that info Steve, I've been wondering that about the fuel lines.

Re: 1.6 Laser fuel filter & hose
I was reading up on tuning the Rover V8 and there was a bit on fuel lines and thats sorta what they said ( ha , just typing this while watching Clarkson ,May and Hammond in the middle east ). I didnt think nylon was all that ethanol proof , and mine is nylon , just went and had a look .

Re: 1.6 Laser fuel filter & hose
No, nylon`s pretty much safe with anything you`ll find in a car:
`Nylon will not degenerate as a result of exposure to alcohols, ethers, ketones, hydrocarbons, halogenated hydrocarbons, lubricant oils, cleaning agents or water (including seawater).`
https://www.foxxlifesciences.com/pages/ ... patibility
(Having said that, I believe I read somewhere that it WAS nylon? It does seem that `rubber` hoses are more of a problem than any hard plastics.)

Cheers for that Stevemarl , good to know . I didnt really ever think about it to much as we dont have an issue with ethanol in fuel .....yetstevemarl wrote: βThu Jun 17, 2021 9:07 amNo, nylon`s pretty much safe with anything you`ll find in a car:

Re: 1.6 Laser fuel filter & hose
I've fitted R6 hose to my capri from the motor factors. It cost something like Β£1.50/ft. Isn't R9 for high pressure applications?
