WEBER GURU NEEDED
HELLO fellow Weber sufferers
Have found recently why I have been having problems starting ....the auto choke flaps stick open after I have had it running and have to remove the air filter pan to get at it and click it shut again before attempting to start it from cold.
Obviously starts ok from warm .
How can I cure this problem ....
Regards Paul

You do know when you`re cold starting you need to depress the gas pedal first to allow the chokes to close? The fast idle cam has a step in it, opening the throttle allows tghe choke to return to fully closed position. Otherwise it will stop at the step and stay 1/3 open.
Re: WEBER GURU NEEDED
Paul,
There are many reasons for this, assuming you are following the correct start procedure.
It is possible for the flaps to vibrate when open and eventually create a groove that they then stick in. This should be easy to see.
Another fault I have found is that the spindle which comes out of the auto choke housing and rotates the levers as the bimetallic strip warms up runs through a ptfe type liner. This can wear over time and eventually starts to snag the spindle.
Auto chokes are excellent bits of kit if set up correctly.
But you need to be sure it's operating properly over all the various cam steps and that the fast idle screw is set on the highest step.
On warm days, even when the engine is cold, the cam will not open that far, so you need to manually set it all before you start.
Sounds like yours needs an overhaul.
Don't suppose you're anywhere near mid-Norfolk or I'd happily take a look for you.

Excellent suggestions there Martin. My autochoke has been sticking of late (i.e. not closing when depressing the pedal for a cold start) and I've turned the housing to richen it to compensate as I was assuming that the bimetal strip has lost it's tension due to age (or is gummed up).
I did think of buying another bimetal coil to change it but I'll have a check on your suggestions first now I've read that.

If it turns out to be the nylon seat in the spindle hole, then don't faff about: pull it all out (it's just a thin, paperlike layer) and stick a bit of grease in there instead.
I assume you are au fait with setting it all up again afterwards?
Also, bear in mind that the temperature will make a difference. If you sit out in the sun with it you won't get the full cold start set up quite right.
You need to be sure it's cold enough that you'll be getting the full 'springiness' out of the bimetallic spring.

Cheers guys ,
Just had a quick check before starting , and the choke plates stay open after a full depression of the accelerator before cranking from cold.
Au fait ???.... errrr yeah of course I am .... I have a Haynes workshop manual ....I am sure I will shout up if I
get stuck .
Probably just go for a complete overhaul ....any idaes on best place to get the parts from.

Hi I had a similar problem but mind was sticking in closed position, has already said probably needs an overall, I spray a little WD 40 on the flaps on mind every so often and make sure the flaps are opening and closing freely before putting airbox back on, works for me.

Thanks very much for all this info Martin, very helpful. I will certainly keep it all in mind for when I take mine apart to see what's happening.

Have to have a 'this way up' label on the patient, just in case.

Looks like a 32/36 DGAV auto choke???

Re: WEBER GURU NEEDED
Shame I'm so far away from you really.
I reckon there's a good chance you don't need any parts at all, just a good fettling.
Fancy a little run down to Norfolk?

Re: WEBER GURU NEEDED
IIRC it`s stamped into the edge of the flange that bolts to the manifold? If both the throttles are same size / open together it`s a 38DGAS, if they`re different sizes and one opens before the other, it`s a 32/36DGAV
