Engine hardware

Post by scottchristian_ »

Hello all,
I've got a 1981 2.8i
This is probably a stupid question but here we go.
I'm hoping to re paint the rocker covers some point soon .
I'm looking to change the bolts for the rocker covers to make it look nice , is there a specific type of bolt that has to be used.
Can anyone recommend a set that I can buy?

Also the same question goes for the differential cover . I've got a replacement cover and I'm looking to change the bolts at the same time , is there a specific bolt needed ?
Can anyone recommend a decent set i can buy.

Thank you
Sorry if its a stupid question
Cheers Scott

Search on ebay is probably the easiest solution.

Capri rocker bolts brings up a few results such as these stainless ones

I think the point is that any bolt that's the same size as the current ones will do. These are not high stressed fittings, they are just holding the covers in place firmly enough to be oil tight.
Only word of note is: don't forget the little spring washers on the diff cover bolts - these stop them working loose and cover coming off.

:agree: They`re just bog standard 12mm long M6 bolts. Get a bag from B&Q / hardware store for a couple of quid.
Or, if you want shiny posh ones you could try something like these, with the flanged head (Ithink the diff cover are this style):

When i replaced my diff cover I thought the same and took one of the original bolts along to a local fittings shop who came up with some nice allen key headed stainless bolts and spring washers.

I also fitted spreader plates at the same time (2x semi circular curved stainless steel strips with aligning bolt holes) to prevent any distortion of the fairly thin metal. Though others tell me they really arent needed they do look quite good with the shiny bolts.

If you want forvever lasting shina get Aisi316 bolts. Remember, you can't use magnets to pick em up, so don't drop.

Allenkey bolts are quite good, atleast i like them. If you got ballhead drivers for them you can access them almost everywhere.

I have used allen head screws for carb adjustment screws where they can be substituted and for the carb ballance screws ( absolute bastard to get at ) on my SS I braized the allen screw head to the existing screw, suited the bike well as can be got at from an angle ( as mentioned above πŸ˜€) but are also easy to keep on the screw while trying to adjust an idling Ducati ( two 96mm slugs at 90⁰ and feck all in the way of flywheels ).
The rocker covers could be held on with them T handle jobs , they look cool enough 😁.

Don't know about you, but my OCD would go haywire if I couldn't get every T lined up exactly with all the others!

Yeah , that'll be why someone else around here doesnt have a set πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ€πŸ˜†, actually the flash ones have the T bit splined onto the shaft .......mine dont . I figure there is a wee bit of give in the gasket and theres always a shim washer .
