Throttle Cables and adjusting them.

Post by CapriFreak »

So a few weeks ago I was sat on my drive trying to start the Capri and the throttle cable snapped!! lucky as the day before I'd been out in it.

I bough a new one off eBay for £5 that is the same Firstline part number as what Burtons sell. I fitted it to the Pedal end and eventually got it into the square cut out in the Throttle linkage mount (had to shave it down a bit). Its on the ball end of the linkage but it seems too tight and binds sometimes when you use it. If I add the plastic bush the revs go up to around 1500rpm and screwing the adjustment thread out seems to make it even tighter so I've left it fully in. so it looks like this...

When you are driving and put the clutch down you can hear the revs are too high. hooking your foot under the Accelerator brings them back down :( without the cable the Carb has a proper snap back so I doubt that is sticking.

Any ideas?? I know its such a simple thing :xd: Cant understand how i'm getting it wrong. the last on also felt a bit crunchy/sticking under foot which I guess is why It broke! It seems like this one just needs a few mm more length.

theres some video on how I fitted it here.

Maybe stating the obcvious, but you know the plastic bush should be pushed through the bracket?

The last one was probably crunchy as the cable was frayed before it snapped

cheers mate, yeah like i said if I push the plastic bush through it tilts the throttle up to about 1000-1500rpm with out touching the pedal. I thought I could adjust it out from here but it seems to get tighter when I turn out the adjuster from where its at in the picture.

So it`s as though the outer cable needs to come down further towards the throttle shaft? You say you had to shave it a bit: is there any way that you could have not located it correctly? Maybe turn it through 90`? If you could get it a couple of mm further into the bracket, that could be just enough. Can`t really suggest anything beyond that I`m afraid, it shouldn`t really be tight at all, I can`t understand where it`s gone wrong.

I had to shave the 4 tabs down to get it through the square hole. I should have time to look again tomorrow day and I’m off work for a week after today :woot: so it can’t be much.
I’ll try the adjustment again with the plastic bush in there. Maybe I’m just being an idiot. If not the only other think I can think of doing is undoing the Carb part of the linkage so the throttle is closed and re-tightening it down in a position that works for this cable. I might just buy one from tickover before this though and keep the firstline as a spare.

Is the rest of the cable free, it's not tight around the brake master cylinder or anything is it?
