Newbe alert.

Post by MikeD »

Hi.

Thanks for letting me in Admin.

Mike here, just skimmed through some posts and It's OK.

I am the new owner of a D reg 1.6 Laser. I'm going to get some hurt when I say that I have been driving Citroens for ever. BX, then 2 AX GT's, then Xantia and now a Xsara.

Xsara was bought new 17 years ago, and I'm not replacing it with the Capri, it has about 4000 miles on it I'm going to enjoy it.
It's just an inheritance thing, but my mates loved them and I sort of wiched I'd gone down the Ford route too.

I promise not to ask any questions early. I've worked out it's a crossflow(ish) already from reading on here.

Mike.

Welcome :) Don't be afraid of asking anything, at any time though, no matter how 'easy' you feel the answer should be, much better to ask something and find out rather than hold back and not know, it's a good forum this, everyone will make you feel at home.

Yes, welcome and ask away. Consider asking questions about a pinto rather than a crossflow though, if yours is original.

Yeah , none of it conflicting πŸ™„πŸ˜.
Been driving Citroens for ever and then buys a capri , sorta like a career criminal asking god for frogivness on his death bedπŸ˜†πŸ˜‰.
There is a surprising amount of good stuff here, info wise ,and some good methods to repair or modify, and a pretty diverse knowledge base ,all the way from me who hasnt driven my crapi for 3 years now ,thru some " unmolested but still loved original tired cars, to average cars , and some real pearlers.
Anyhow ,welcome from me too, and dont hold back on the questions . Thats the whole point in the forum .πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚

Thanks all. Great that I've found a source of info.
Will be researching more before I ask silly questions.

Will do. Just back from a 600 mile airport run round trip Cumbria to Heathrow and back. I love driving. Could have done without the M4- Heathrow closure today.

I used to do Autograss and I've helped change and worked on a pinto engine. Didn't look the same.
I'll supply photos later this week.
It's original.

Sorry, late reply, other stuff on the go,

D675 SAO

I'll get a photo of the engine tomorrow. Needs a bit of work, none of it engine related, I can get that going. All the rubber is rotten (steering rack etc.)
I just want to get it back on the road :-)

The only crossflow engine that made it into the Mk3 was a 1300. It was only an option in the lowest levels of trim and was quietly dropped after a few years. As they were the cheapest way into Capri ownership some people dropped 1600 crossflow Mk2 Escort engines in them, a few more bhp without much work and without looking modified. Those will be the only 1600 crossflow Mk3 Capris you would see, if there are any left.

The Laser was a late Mk3 and was only offered in the UK with Pinto engines. Pinto's have been removed over the years to make space for Essex and Cologne V6s, adapted Zetec lumps, Rover & Ford small block V8s etc but Ive never heard of anyone doing all that work to downgrade to a crossflow,

Yes, thanks for that, it is a 1.6 pinto. It show's how little I know. I'm used to seeing small crossflows in FWD cars, and 2L pinto's in RWD but something about it made me think it wasn't a pinto. I guess I'm used to seeing bigger pinto engines with twin 40's and all sorts of modifications and looking at the capri engine with the stock air box etc. I just assumed crossflow.

If it still has the original single barrel vv carb it may be worth replacing with a standard 32/36 Weber & manifold from a 2 litre. A cheap and cheerful upgrade which usefully narrows the performance gap.

I think, as it's all original I should keep it that way for now and concentrate on getting it roadworthy.

Note to me: Must get pictures.

I know, and I'm not very good at explaining, but I haven't even got it out the garage and washed yet. It's complicated, I'm working on other stuff regarding my late mam's will. If anyone asks it's not worth much...

I promise in a week or two, I'll get a photo or 2.
