2.8 i timing

Post by veitchy67 »

hi lads hope you can help ,i will start from the beginning ,i have rebuilt the engine set the timing got engine running but when i come to set the timing (12degrees BTDC) its run,s but slugish and is hard to start (hot or cold) also struggle with the idle. but saying that if you retard it further you can set the idle and it runs well and starts first time every time but the timing is more like 25 degrees BTDC, i have never touched the mixture screw as its still got the tamper proof cap on any help would be appreciated regards david

Im not familiar with this engine but I would make sure that your timing marks are correct. Some engines with rubber vibration dampeners ( harmonic balancers ) the outer ring of the balancer ( the bit with the timing marks ) can slip round the inner boss and render said marks useless. Put a long screwdriver into No 1 spark plug hole and slowly ( by hand ....not starter ) turn engine until piston is at tdc and then have a look at your timing marks .....they should line up maybe not quite perfectly ( the ole screwdriver down the hole method introduces some margin of error ) on TDC
Its probly not that tho :D but you gotta verify it 1st otherwise everything else you try ignition wise is pointless :xd:
Sometimes I talk to myself ... and we both have a good laugh

Kind of what MC Tool is saying: if you have rebuilt the engine did you line up the dots on the crank and cam timing wheels when it all went back together?

Are you checking the timing with the vacuum advance disconnected? Engine vacuum can advance the timing.

guys you have got me doubting myself (lol) about the timing marks on the timing gears but i am 99.9 % sure i had them in line. so i have just done the screw driver test number 1 piston is at TDC and the crack shaft timing marks is at ( 0 ) on compression stroke ,so any other suggestions would be aprpreciated redards david

What have you got the plugs gapped at although I can't imagine it can be that far out.

Thinking of the timing marker I believe there are two threaded holes on the front casing that it is possible to screw it in to. Is yours in the one that is higher up?

Sorry, have to ask, you definitely have an Imperial feeler gauge not a metric one?

If your cam wheel is a new aftermarket alloy or steel one .then theres two dots on the wheel so you might have lined it up to the wrong dot.bare in mind im pissed and what do i kno haha

When the distributor was put back in could it be a tooth out where it engages the cam?
