Re: respray
If it's standard solid black then regular two pack is usually good enough. As for getting a repaint at a cheap price I would invest in a compressor, spraygun and good mask if I were you.
I see you own a Robin Hood. I built one myself about 20 years ago but had to sell it in 2019 as i got too fat to drive it!

Re: respray
I don't know of any painter who would accept you supplying the paint and doing your own prep. How would they be able to guarantee their work under those circumstances. I know that if I suggested that to my guys there would be a very short answer.millerlite wrote: ↑Fri Sep 15, 2023 6:50 am hi iam going to ready in a few weeks to get mine repainted trying to find someone near me (kings lynn ) that isn't going to charge me more than i payed for the car, bare shell no glass i will be getting paint myself as i get trade and prepping it was thinking two pack with lacquer? its std black or what would you guys recommend paint wise ,if can't get a reasonable price will be doing it myself

Re: respray
You may be successful, I am toying with the idea of getting mine resprayed and looking nickable, might not do it, but I was serious enough that I approached my paint spraying mate that does jobs for insurancr companies, really talented bodywork guy, and asked him exactly what you are wondering: to keep costs down, can I buy the paint and do the prep work?
He said yes. If you don't know anyone who does it, best thing to do is to drive to a few places, say hi, explain your position, see what they say and if possible do the prep work there (which is what I was going to do) so they can advise and you can sort of do it under supervision.
Worst they can do is say no, but folk tend to empathise with a man with an old Ford and a limited budget I find

Re: respray
A mate of mine has a body repair and restoration business. He has painted cars for people that have been prepaired but he finds it is never done to a standard that is good enough so he always adds some extra to the quote to prepare to a better standard. He does shells for a Mini restoration company and they always need several days work before he gets any painting materials out.
Being black it will need to be almost perfect.
As Martin has said it is unlikely you will find some one to use your materials and this is not going to be enough of the final cost to worry about saving a few quid on what you can pay and what you will be charged.

TBH, as well as the points Caprigear made re. guaranteeing quality of finish when they (their company) have not carried out operations, there is also the H&S, and insurance, aspect of allowing some guy off the street into your workshop without training, hazard awareness etc, etc. If you trip or fall down a pit...

Re: respray
Maybe I get lucky with garages.. I'm usually allowed to borrow tools and make tea, use the air lines and jacks and even air tools! Last time this happened I had my fuel hose split, reconnected it, limped to the closest garage, the guy pointed at the spare hoses hanging up, pointed at the tools and said knock yourself out! Didn't even take any cash for the trouble, literally would not let me pay. It's worth asking!nemo wrote: ↑Sat Sep 16, 2023 9:44 amTBH, as well as the points Caprigear made re. guaranteeing quality of finish when they (their company) have not carried out operations, there is also the H&S, and insurance, aspect of allowing some guy off the street into your workshop without training, hazard awareness etc, etc. If you trip or fall down a pit...They`d need to be pretty brave , to the point of recklessness, (or your Dad) to allow it.

Re: respray
I have a good relationship with my local garage, but there are some things where no sane person would take the risk (or want to take the risk). When I had welding done, I stripped the interior out, did a fair bit of the wire brushing and scraping back of the underseal, but I still knew the welder would have bits he needed to do beforehand before he was in a happy state to get started.

we are not talking about welding
Re: respray
Forgive me if I'm missing the point but are you suggesting CapriGear's reply is not helpful.
Probably the most experienced Capri restorer you'll find but if you've dismissed his input then fair enough eh?

Re: respray
Similar point though - you want to do the donkey work yourself, sand it, fill it, prime it, then take it to the main man and see what he says. Save a few quid for sure. Very much like prepping for a welding job.

Re: respray
There are a few instances where one could say " its all in the preparation " and painting stuff would have to be right up there. Thusly I could understand some painters not wanting to entrust this task to some....... one
. Im thinkin that if one doesnt have the nouse ( or confidence )to paint the car ....probly shouldnt prep it either .
Depends what sort of quality your prepared to accept I guess . I painted my Esky , never used a spray gun before , metallic charcoal two pack , and it looked good after I sanded off the orange peel ( put an extra coat or two to allow for this ) and cleared it ........completely missed the bottom of drivers door....with both primer and colour coat, but I got the clear on ok

Wise words. This is why I think it'd be best to do it there, if he'd be allowed.Mc Tool wrote: ↑Mon Sep 18, 2023 4:27 am There are a few instances where one could say " its all in the preparation " and painting stuff would have to be right up there. The worst they'd say is a very reasonable no. I say drop into a few places and make introductions, see what they say. And I really mean go down in person, with the car, to ask. Can't see a phone conversation getting anywhere at all.

Totally agree with you - it just isn't cheap anymore for this kind of work. I have just been quoted 2k possibly more for outer sill replacement x 2, rear wheel arches x2, rear valence and 2 x lower rear corners. This does not include painting just blending and primer. Seems pretty reasonable to me, what do you guys think?
If an honest man is wrong and after demonstrating that he is wrong he either stops being wrong or stops being honest
Re: respray
The parts alone will be a few quid, plus that`s an awful lot of fabrication (i.e. labour)... I`d say that was less than I`d expect.
