It's time to step into the 1970s..

Post by Major_Tom »

..long story short, I'm going back to the olde ways.

Who supplies decent points and condensers these days?
I'm the one who leaves all those shoes in the carriageway.

In my experience its NOS what you need, 95% of stuff now is made in China and is crap quality. Just because it comes in a box from a recognised manufacturer means nothing sadly. I might have a couple of sets if you want me to have a look?
Why are going back to points? Originality or because of a bad experience with an electronic system?

Hello again gents, well, yes I have had chronic timing issues and this is the last thing I can think of. On top of that, I have metal swarf, fine as silver facepaint, on the magnetic sump plug every oil change.

I assumed this was something I'm noticing simply because the replacement sump plug picks it up now, but I was sent something interesting about the AccuSpark distributor and this metal swarf was suspected to be from the auxiliary shaft, because it is not designed to bear the mass of the modern internals and causes excess wear.

My Bestek distributor is a similar design and I have an old points dizzy in the shed so we'll see.

There is another post about it seemingly causing someone's pinto to spit back excessively, and my untraceable mysterious kicking back when starting, wrecking starters and now ring gear, only started when this was installed I think.
I'm the one who leaves all those shoes in the carriageway.

Old school is the best school for sure Tom. I just get my points/condenser from the local motorfactor, seem fine, no issues. I can find out what make they are if you like though from experience most motorfactors seem to use the same supplier/stockists.

Peter I did see that in a book a few years ago about being the best engine in the world

Yes the accuspark had done my leads and was killing coils after around 300 miles . I have heard so many horror stories as well Tom .
I am sending my old distributor away for a 123 ignition set up for my Capri also sorting the 32/36 carb .
The shit Chinese brake calipers are going in the bin and having my Orignal ones refurbished with new disks & pads at the same time .
I refurbished clocks and watches and learnt years ago to use good or old parts . Not Chinese stuff as it gives up the ghost so quick would be nice if the U.K. made more stuff .

So having some work done on the old Capri this year .

Why not fit an electronic kit to an original distributor? Best of both then.
The problem is we are our own worst enemy when we buy this new kit, we have a look and then search for the cheapest first. If we searched for the item with the longest warranty like 3 years and/or 36k miles I suspect most of this stuff would last for years. How can they make a new distributor, send it half way around the planet, make a profit and still do it for under Β£100? If a similar unit was Β£200 but came with a 3 year warranty I know which I would choose.
I was asked to fit an Alternator to a friends modern car, he had purchased it off the Web for less half the price I could source one from a local motor factor, it didnt work once installed and when he contacted the supplier they just sent another and didnt even ask for the faulty one back. Some research showed these can be purchased for under Β£10 from China if bought in bulk.

Yeah I did have an Aldon Igniter, the sleve and sensor thing years back... that was trouble free now I think about it. But last time I looked they were more expensive than I remember!

It's what I fitted probably close on 10 years ago. Haven't had to touch it since πŸ™‚

Tom I too got an Aldon Ignitor on mine a few years back with help from John to wire it in for me. I recall Dave "Smoke Em" strongly advised me at the time to fit the Aldon Ignitor rather than the much mentioned Accuspark . Way more expensive than the Accuspark but was advised the quality was so much better. Still have it in the std distributor. Very simple bit of kit if you have someone like John to wire it in

Was and still pretty tempted to get the full Bestek set up as loads of people on fb swear by this but now Im waiting to hear what Jason thinks of his 123 Ignition Set Up which sounds really good too.

But for now and especially after a decent tuning session with John Im happy with the Aldon Ignitor as no issues on that side if things. Thing with points and condensers is exactly what many complain about... the quality of the suppliers stock but then again many here still swear by them so they must be decent quality still.

Just a few POINTS I wanted to CONDENSE into my thread
