Overcooling

Post by Major_Tom »

..is this actually a thing?

Since the new aluminium radiator, and probably knackered thermostat that will have to wait until after Christmas, my water temperature in these wintred weeks has been way low, and at any kind of speed, so low I have been a bit worried about oil temperature.

I have added the high tech Adjustable Monolithic Fibrous Thermal Regulation Device for now, but just wondering on your thoughts about cooling overefficiency.

Long term use with an over cooled engine is not a good idea, condensation in the oil wont evaporate and the ware in the engine will be higher. Engines are designed to run at between 85 and 95c. I think the coldest thermostats you can get are about 75c so in theory that is the coldest the engine will run at.

I have noticed a similar issue with both of mine since fitting CoolEx ally rads - only because the air blowing around is no longer warm 😂

The fans on both are (obviously) broken, (I did fix them both during COVID but both now fucked again and can't be bothered taking it all out again) but they at least used to have warm air coming out before the rads were fitted now they only blow cold air at me all the time.

Having said that, I have noticed that mine gets warm enough to send the temperature gauge up to about 1/2 or 2/3 ish and then it drops down again to probably about 1/3 - I assume this is when the thermostat opens, which would explain why it drops again - so if your thermostat is broken and presumably then not opening, that may be the issue....??

Well, my heater matrix started leaking, slippery feet what what! So I bypassed it.

Surely mine is stuck open though, mine barely goes over the second line. In this weather doesnt even get there!

An easy way to tell would be to run it for a while and then take the rad cap off - if you don't get scalded it's not running warn enough, if you do get scalded and your skin starts peeling then it's fine 🤣

Maybe what you need is something to generate sparks in the engine bay to keep it warm? ;)
