A few questions for the floor.

Post by ESSEXV6ESSEX »

I have been offered an Anti Dive Kit. Anybody know what this does and where it fits on a 3 litre MK3? Is it worth fitting?

Also my 3 litre has a none LSD axle. I believe that somebody does a LSD conversion for these, is this correct?

Last but not least, are axle location kits worth fitting?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Mark,
I'll say from the start that I know nothing about what's involved in an LSD upgrade, but Burton sell Quaife LSD diff internals for the Atlas.
I imagine any axle specialist should be able to upgrade a standard diff to an LSD if you aren't able to do it yourself.

Evans and Sons in Haverfordwest do a complete Atlas axle rebuild service.
I have heard that he's a really friendly chap. It could be worth calling for a chat and getting some advice, even if it's not practical for you to send your axle there.

What kind of axle location kit is it? I and a few others on here have X-frames, makes a lot of difference when driven enthusiastically 8-)

I've never fitted an anti-dive kit, but from what I've heard, if you have stiff springs (very stiff for an Essex) then they arent as necessary The olde Laser Page owner Mark Swetnam did a page on them though, I'll find it.

If I remember the anti dive kit was something that fits between the front anti roll bar and the original mounting points. I think it is meant to stiffen the front end to keep it more stable in the event of heavy braking. Unless you regularly drive very enthustiastically I would not have thought it will be of much benefit but, then again, I've never had one so I might be wrong!

Couldn't find it, sorry! The site doesn't seem to have a search function. I did find this though:

Its not really anti dive ,by lowering the arb mounts brings the arb to a more level position (viewed from side ), this reduces the amount the arb has to move to bring itself horizontal ( which is the direction the force is applied under braking ).Less movement means less suspension compression . Should have been like this from factory.
It does reduce the amount of dive ........ doesn't cost much .......bolts on , why not give it a whirl

Not got any of these fitted to any of my car's but my view is that unless you're racing the car, does it really need any of that stuff...?

The occasional spirited drive surely coulsnt justify needing these mods?

Just a thought....

It could be argued that these mods might help our cars to perform as well as modern vehicles.. thus increasing the spirit-factor of the spirited drive.

I think it one of them things where Danny is probly a wee bit right but, if you fit one you'll probly wish you'd done it years ago , if you dont you'll always be happy the way you are 🙂

Hi Mark,

I know it's not really what you asked. But the best mod I did to mine was the front Strut support across the engine.

We have speed humps all round here, a LOT of them and the weight of the V6 it always felt wallowy (not sure if that's even a word) at the front when going over these. As soon as I fitted the strut support, it transformed the whole car. Speed humps taken with ease now and I'm positive it really helped with the handling, as we know the V6 usually wants to go on in a straight line when being pushed, a bit like a Vectra handles normally, but this really does seem to have helped the handling and the braking as well as the speed humps....

Cheers for now,

John...

If you already run a Capri then first fit an Axle location kit. Either A-Frame or X-Frame, both work but it's the fronts of the leaves that need stiffening because they are fitted with heavy duty bushes at the front which can take the strain and the front halves are the main axle locators. The rear shackles are designed to pivot forwards/backwards as the springs lengthen and they don't provide any lateral stiffness so I just went with the A-Frame.

Next best bolt-on is the front strut brace. These make a phenomenal improvement in front-end handling. During heavy cornering the whole of a Capri body will twist and this puts the steering geometry out meaning your fifty quid wheel alignment isn't working. I noticed a significant improvement round the first roundabout after fitting one, she used to squeal a bit there before ;-)
A similar effect can be had for the rear by fitting a towbar to stiffen the rear chassis ends.

The anti-dive kit does work - by reducing nose-dive on braking which unbalances the car (this braking perhaps utilised before cornering) which then keeps more grip on the rear tyres (perhaps beneficial when you turn into a corner.)

These improvements work for normal road use along with fast road use but the A-Frame is the most important safety-wise. My first sentence in this post is and instruction rather than a suggestion!

Yup! Imagine looking at your Capri from the front. There are two vertical supports (the struts) and there's a lower horizontal support (x-member).
But what stops the strut towers trying to move in and out? Nothing. Complete that square with a strut brace and you'll notice a difference.
