I am pretending that it's a trophy from a dead rival, like the numberplates on the front of that Peterbilt in Dual.

What a great film that was, arguably Steven Spielberg's best film and made on a shoe string budget too.

I used watch it over and over as a kid. Never got the subtext of the movie until later in life, that the truck is a metaphor for the unresolved issues in David Mann's life.. who is a bit of a sap and allows events to snowball into greater problems.

And I misspelled, it's Duel of course, silly me! Hadnt been up long

My favourite Spielberg film, truly excellent, have the special edition DVD. Also check out the 1978 Hulk episode Never Give A Trucker An Even Break, a lot of the footage was used in that.

I love when that mechanic points out he needs a new radiator hose, and he is such an inadequate character that he doesnt ever check himself, has been ripped off before and goes "oh yeah, I've heard that before, 'I'll get one later thanks!''

But this time, he does actually need one and it becomes one of the many things he has become complacent about and just as he is about to get away from the truck after using the grade... it fails. Great character moment.

That scene is absolutely superb, the radiator hose blown, steam everywhere, oil light flashing, temp gauge at max, Dennis Weaver utterly terrified and of course the 2 shots of that gorgeous truck steaming up the hill behind him, to this day still of one of the best films I have ever seen made even better by Mr Weaver's portrayal of David Mann.

And it was from a story by Richard Matheson - worth looking up if you're not familiar with him, you are bound to have heard of some of his other incredible creations.

I highly recommend this anthology for the short story and a load of other car-based horror.
