High torque starter for 2.9

Post by 80s-new-man »

Hi all.
I was thinking of upgrading the starter on my 2.9 BOB engined special… it always seems a tad lethargic when cranking. I think maybe it’s the original.
As the engine is the Scorpio Cosworth 2.9 I am after a high torque starter to fit. Can anyone recommend a good specialist? I tried the usual suspects like burton etc but they didn’t seem to on their sites.
Cheers

It's usually only high compression 4-cyl engines that need high torque starters.
I'm the one who leaves all those shoes in the carriageway.

Hi mate,

High torque starter motor's are great, I have one on an Essex V6...... but be warned unlike the standard starter motor they do not have the provision on them to send 12 volts to the coil during cranking.

On my car i had to run a separate switch to feed the coil 12 volts during cranking, without this she was seriously hard to start especially on cold mornings, admittedly running a switch is no big deal but I just want to make you aware that its not a take one off and put one on jobbie.

Not sure the above applies to the set up you have though.

Appreciate the info guys..
I suppose there’s reasons there why I cannot find any…
I guess then, it may be just good to get a brand new replacement?
Cheers
