The scene is the orthopedic trauma ward , Christchurch NZ , circa August 2009.
Bit of background. ....up the ward from me ,as yet unexplored ground as I was stuck in bed with the normal array of hoses and wires, there was a dementia patient ( who I assume had had a fall ) and every now and then he would let out a fairly good loud bellow.
Enter the shopkeeper , on a wheely bed ,anyhow this rooster would not shut up ," bla bla fucking bla".
Some time later ( next day ) nursie swoops in ( and they do swoop ) , curtains are pulled and whispered mutterings are heard from behind the curtain . Nurse departs and the curtain slides bach . Shopkeeper is a paisty shade of grey and he leans over towards me and asks quietly " whats it like when they pull the catheter out ?" Well just then the old boy up the ward lets out a particularly impressive bellow , and I says "oh thats old Bob , they been trying to get his out for a couple of days ". Well he changes colour , now chalky white , hits the buzzer and nursie duly arrives , curtains pulled , more whispers , and nursie , with a smirk a mile wide pokes her head thru the curtain and shake finger at me .
Yeah , probly shouldnt have but .......
