My 2.0S

Post by Major_Tom »

..figured it was time for some new pictures. 150bhp, 170nm pinto on twin webers, 3.77:1 open diff, head skim -40thou, with a Newman Cams PH4.5 284 474 rally cam, drives nice through town at low revs despite what the literature suggested, can't recommend that cam enough. Bestek electronic ignition with rally distributor. PLR exhaust and manifold. Axle location kit, 190lb front springs -1". Adjustable shocks all round. 14" Dragslots. No engine pics as my carbs look like shit after my Pipercross air filters burst into flames after a spit back. Pictures taken at an abandoned hospital.

Yeah it's lots of fun.

Yeah you can really see the fact its got patterned wings on in some of those pics, but if you straighten them up in one plane, it opens up huge gaps or doesn't sit level in others, bloody annoying  still, makes the other motorists faces that much more amusing when you go flying past them when it looks so beat up 👍

It looks great, understated but with definite purpose. How does your fuel consumption compare with standard ?

Looks mean and nasty (in a good way).
I expect you enjoy wiping the smiles off the faces off boy racers in their Corsas !

And the Type Rs, the ST170s, the Golfs and the 325is 8-)

They're all just too heavy these days. Kept up with a police 5 series the other day. Cop loved it

I got 195 miles out of a tank, so not great  it does get thrashed though. It's going on the rollers in a fortnight so we'll see if that makes any difference!

Sorry to geek out, but how much does this weigh?
A trip on the weighbridge would be as interesting as the rollers.
As noted its the lardness of modern hatches that allows you to embarrass them with a relatively modest headline power output.

I had a new Mini Cooper until last year, and that had a kerb weight of 1230kg. The "heavy" Capri 2.8 with its iron block V6 still comes in under 1200kg I believe, which is a hilarious comparison.
Now I know which one is probably safer in a side impact, but even so it speaks a lot about the priorities and compromises made in car engineering lately.

From memory I think the Haynes lists a standard pinto engine at about 1050-1100kg?

With Tom's lack of seats, and a holey floor I'd guess even less

I have rear seats now! But a few other missing bits, like all the soundproofing and carpets and a load of interior and exterior trim.

About a ton I reckon, maybe less. As you say Noel it'd be great to get it on a weighbridge, missed my chance when Essex police were pulling over all the shabby looking vehicles they could find... they had corralled a bunch of them into a little compound with a load of VOSA inspectors and a weighbridge in it, but forgot to ask because it turned into comedy.

First thing I did was open the bonnet, the cops loved it and got talking to them. Then Julie Ann jumped into one of their squad cars, got a great photo of that somewhere, the police were pissing themselves.

Who decided to choose that Godawful yellow/green and blue colour for police cars. Red is the colour or danger and warning and they sure looked great back in the day in that colour. No criminal is scared of yellow/green and blue!
