Capri 2.8 struts

Post by Dansta »

Hi folks.

My 2.8 front struts were modified to use the Capri sport fitment of a Mondeo caliper. I want to remove this but since the caliper mount was drilled out to fit the bracket, I guess I need to replace the lower part of the strut. Since Bilstein struts are not exactly easily available I guess I'll need to get new struts.

Are the escort MK1/MK2 Bilstein struts compatible with the 2.8? Eg https://www.motorsport-tools.com/escort ... 9j24hovgh3

Appreciate these are adjustable coil overs. Thanks

It is perfectly acceptable to use standard Capri struts.
You will need to swap over all the braking bits etc, but you can fit them with uprated cartridge type dampers and they'll easily cope, plus probably be a lot cheaper. I fitted Gaz dampers on one, set to their softest setting they were fine. You also get three lives out of the dampers as once they get a bit soft you can tweak them up 2-3 clicks.
Bear in mind that the spring seat on a Bilstein leg is 1" further down the strut, so you'd need -1" springs to keep the same ride height.

Unless you want originality then this is a more commonly available option.

Thanks for your reply, I'll give that some thought too.

Originality isn't prime concern with this car as it's drifted away from that with previous owners
