D53 MCY - Anyone know where it is?
Hi,
Looking for this car. It belonged to a friend of mine in the early nineties who passed away a few years ago.
DVLA shows it is SORN and the MOT expired September 2019.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, yes I contacted the member but the last post was November 2012 and according to the DVLA a new logbook was issued 28th January 2015.
I guess I'll just have to keep watch to see if it ever comes up on a classified or auction site.
Thanks anyway!

A search on Google brings up a few photos from that same advert which was on Turbosport forum at the same time as the Laser Page ad.
It would appear to have been scrapped in July 2019 though from what I can see, sorry.

That’s funny as I was about to ask the same question as all the little sites I have been on want £10 or more to find out

All those sites get their info from the DVLA, and they say that it's on SORN.Jasonmarie wrote: ↑Sat Jan 09, 2021 11:30 pm That’s funny as I was about to ask the same question as all the little sites I have been on want £10 or more to find out
I'm not saying that this car hasn't been broken for parts or scrapped, just that if it hasn't been recorded with the DVLA as such, all those car search sites will show it as SORN too.
Andrew.
Re: D53 MCY - Anyone know where it is?
It does look as though it survived as it has a (more or less) continuous MOT history from 2012 onwards so probably is SORNed Mileages are weird though, year on year goes:

Stevo has some info that it was scrapped, was just wondering how he found that out as I wasn't aware of a site which has that info?Andrew 2.8i wrote: ↑Sun Jan 10, 2021 7:36 am All those sites get their info from the DVLA, and they say that it's on SORN.
Re: D53 MCY - Anyone know where it is?
I`d have gone with Andrew`s post, but it seems that an HPI check will reveal a previously scrapped vehicle:
"You cannot check if a vehicle has been scrapped directly with the DVLA for free sadly, but you can buy a car check from us (or elsewhere) and check it that way. This is because the DVLA does not release this information for free."
Must admit, I just tried some made up 15 y.o. regs and they all come back as `untaxed`, as does my old Viva: don`t ever remember seeing `scrapped on DD MM YY` on DVLA site.

Re: D53 MCY - Anyone know where it is?
Would a scrapped vehicle be recorded as being on SORN though, as this Capri is?
Andrew.
Re: D53 MCY - Anyone know where it is?
I don`t know, DVLA seems to work in a strange way. They issue a Certificate of Destruction when it`s scrapped at an approved centre, yet they won`t tell you it`s scrapped without a charge. So maybe they just leave it`s last known status unaltered? My Viva was scrapped, V5 etc, in 2003 and just shows `untaxed` presumably `till the end of time.
I can`t see why they won`t disclose this as surely it`s in the public interest? Isn`t that what the civil service is for?

Re: D53 MCY - Anyone know where it is?
In fact it`s all a bit murky: here`s my very, very 1st car (well, my dad`s really) also a Viva which was written off in 1977, chassis twisted after going through a dry stone wall, beyond repair . It was scrapped, we were paid out, end of story. NOTE the 1977 bit.
Then, lo and behold
So this was brought back on the road for a further 6 years after it `died.` Does make you wonder.

Re: D53 MCY - Anyone know where it is?
That's a frightening thought, but back in those days, I believe it was quite easy for people to buy cars from the scrapyard and put them back on the road. The plates from that car might have even been put on a stolen car, you never know.

Was there ever a period of old, un-used/scrapped number plates being resold and put onto other vehicles?Andrew 2.8i wrote: ↑Wed Jan 13, 2021 1:51 pmThat's a frightening thought, but back in those days, I believe it was quite easy for people to buy cars from the scrapyard and put them back on the road. So I did work on a case of stolen MOT certificates that were being used for rare numbers plates as then the car with the number plate had to have a mot cert to be transferred on to another car with a V5 & taxed .
It got very common thing until the new mot system .

That`s why they used to keep the certificates in a safe!Jasonmarie wrote: ↑Wed Jan 13, 2021 8:44 pm So I did work on a case of stolen MOT certificates that were being used for rare numbers plates as then the car with the number plate had to have a mot cert to be transferred on to another car with a V5 & taxed .
