Fire Extinguisher Location

Post by pbar »

Just wondering where you guys locate your fire extinguisher, if you carry one that is. Usually have one in the boot, but have often thought it's not the best place, if you need it, then you need it quickly, and jumping out of the car, remembering your keys and fumbling to unlock the boot, perhaps in the dark, makes it not the best location.

I test drove a Capri some years ago and this had one at the driver's footwell, screwed to the side, great place but just didn't look/feel right.

Currently full up and no more space but I still want a 2.8...

I've seen a few with them screwed to the side of the footwell, seen another screwed to the bottom of the glove box as well. The only other place I could thing is (depending on size) whether you could fit one below the door shut along the sill next to the seat?

Thanks Danny. I have toyed with the idea of under the driver's seat or behind in the rear somewhere but within reach, just doesn't seem to be enough room!

That's where I would put one if enough space. I have a plastic takeaway container there to put my airfreshner and other small bits in :)

Seen a few on the passenger side of the transmission tunnel.
Some of them work equally well when still attached to their mounting bracket, so you could look at using Velcro to secure it to the carpet?
If it was down low the floor would take the weight and if you needed it quickly then it wouldn't matter whether it came out of the bracket or the whole thing just came away together.
That way it's not a permanent fit and you could stick it away in the boot at a show, for example, to keep your interior looking mint.

I guess it depends how big it is - are they a standard size? I don't know.
I have one in the 2.8 and it just lays on the floor on the right of the driver's seat. There's just enough room and as it fits fairly snuggly I've not secured it but it doesn't move.

That looks like a perfect place Tom.

Can I also take the time to comment on your mint interior? Particularly on what I assume must be the original giraffe print(?) arm rest cover. Mine came with write rhino skin but a previous owner took it off which is a shame - impossible to come by again.

Yeah and if you get hit from behind, at any speed, its a near certainty the boot wont open :?

I think it needs a proper retainer , having just ploughed into a stationary vehicle at about 70 km/h I can tell you normal things turn into missiles , Id be surprised if you could even find that extinguisher :) , and give some thought to stuff stored behind you.....like dont leave it on the back seat or in the boot area in coupe style cars ( my prosthetic leg wound up on the dash.....between the air bags ). In my opinion the best place is firmly attached to the trans tunnel just behind the hand brake ,that way a hit from any direction is unlikely to leave it inaccessible

Maybe double straps is a wee bit overkill for a small extinguisher.
Same goes for pets ,last thing you need is fido in the back of the head breaking your neck . :)

Yes its got to be properly attached.. but I think I might get some of those straps as extra insurance. But its also important to ensure its easy to get out in a crisis. How many passengers have failed to work out the Capri handle on the way to get tea and cakes? When the adrenaline is pumping, lots of parts of the brain turn off and the most simple challenge can be baffling.

I guess thats why those claymore mines have "front towards enemy" stamped on them, as in the midst of the fight for life logic centres turn off and the processing power is reduced.

Mine is currently mounted in the boot, but I take your points. The rear footwell behind me is filled with a rolled-up waterproof and jumper all the time, so I could stick it under there without too much difficulty. (I never have rear seat passengers).

Nah , I mean if its not there in the car its never going to become a missile , and supposing you survive any impact that may be the cause of a fire you not going to get all heroic and try to recover an extinguisher from a burning vehicle to put it out ......not a perfect theory :xd: ....... specially if any fire starts real small and there would have been time to get to an extinguisher should one have been available. My boat was festooned with extinguishers, if you can't swim you kinda short on options if you torch your boat ( I can swim......real well 🏆...Dianne ......not so much ⚓)

Sure, but if I come across an upside down vehicle with somebody stuck in it and it's started to go up, it'd be nice to try and save the poor fuckers, rather than watching them die in one of the worst ways imaginable.

Thanks very much for all the replies, good food for thought. I never realised there was that much space next to the driver's seat and the door, nice idea with the knick-knack tray Andy.

Just to throw a spanner in the works the little fire extinguishers we all have only last 10 secs top and that’s not going to put out a fag .
But these last 100secs and will sit at the side of your seat .

One warning yes they are not cheap ..
