Round II, Capri II 3000 Ghia

Post by 3 Litre Power »

Hello everyone, i', back after three years, still alive and kicking, so is the Capri
Which has just passed 505.000km, 314.000 miles.

Not much to report except i put my NOS Pepper Pots on it back in August last year, and i am not kidding they are New Old Stock, bought more or less exactly 30 years ago in March 1990.

The gearbox is sadly on its way out after such many miles and years of service, and i am thinking of either sending it off for a rebuild....

Engine runs like clockwork, i've always thought the ignition timing should be set at 10 for the Essex if run on 98 Octane, then one day i realised it was 14! and my god what a difference, runs so smooth and feels like it's gained at least 30 horsepower lol

Or, A friend i met last year who lives around 30 miles away and owns a lovely Blue 1981 2.8i , is willing to sell me the Type 5 from his 1981 2.8i which now has a Type 9 5 speed, in theory the box has 54.000 miles, no problems, and all that should be necessary to fit it would be to cut 15mm off the input shaft.

In other news this is my new daily driver :

A 1988 Escort Mk4 XR3i Cabrio, 177.000km and after some minor work runs like a swiss watch, and is fun, reliable and economical.

Cars look great

A mate has a Mk4 XR3i Cabby fitted with a Series 2 RS Turbo engine chipped to 165 bhp, that is a quick car :drive:

Prefer hardtop (tintop) cars personally, but you have the weather for the soft tops :D

Oh I wish I could spend the rest of my days on Majorca driving around in a pair of lovely classics like that.

As said, both cars look fantastic.
Does the Capri still have it's original engine?
Half a million k's is good going!

Have you lost your friend, as I think they've been sucked into the throttle housing of the XR...…. :D

Andrew.

No i just discovered the other day the engine is actually from November 1972, probably has more than 200k kms, still runs good though, uses no oil, doesn't smoke or leak and has good power.

In theory too the 1972 engine is supposed to be more powerful than the original one, as in 1973 they had to change the camshaft profile to meet emissions regulations so the 3.0 Essex V6 went from having 144 to 138hp.
