Got the dash out / dials to try and figure out why i'm getting no illuminations. I guessed it could have been the bulbs are so dark or gone they cant be seen. Turns out it does light up testing it with a 9v battery. I've replaced most of the bulbs with LEDs now so will plug it in tomorrow to test it but... can anyone figure out why someone might have tied a a wire under this nut? im not sure where the wire goes yet but it looks like that nut follows round to the Tacho on the dials.
IMG_5579.jpg
Before this i've cleaned up the fuse box & A pillar earth. Also have no illumination for the clock and glovebox :deadhorse:

I would guess that there is a problem with the printed circuit or tacho connection on the multiplug. Perhaps somebody thought that hardwiring was the solution? My guess would be that wire goes to fuse 7, or maybe even bypasses the fuse and is wired directly to the coil.

So the wire to the taco goes round to the coil. This car has what i think is a sierra electronic ignition so i always thought that was to do with a 12v feed for it, as i guess it would have been points before this.
IMG_5602.jpg
Not really sure what to do with that... i guess i just re attach it? it must be doing something?

Secondly there is a thick white wire that runs from what i think is the illumination "pin" all the way down to the drivers side headlight.
IMG_5608.jpg
IMG_5605.jpg
Not sure if these two wires are giving me any problems but i wish it was all standard as i feel like the chance of something going wrong is greater here.

Does sound like a `fix` for either PCB damage or a bad multipin?

LET THERE BE LIGHT!!! finely got these working! plus the glovebox light too. Just need to order bulbs for the Fog Switch, Heated Window, Cig Lighter and Centre Clock! All these seem to be blown or just one in the clock worked. I've taken these clocks back out and will have a mess over Xmas week. I never removed the bulb caps that most people do when doing the LED conversion and i think they are way to dim still. Also, thinking i might change to green or a different colour and put these in my Escort as that is suffering from Dim white lights.
IMG_5635.jpg
Lastly i noticed a little water leak here... not sure how thats coming in but, for now i've put a Halford car cover on it just to stop water entering the car. The floors getting wet on both sides at the front of the car anyway but this one is new as it looks like its dropped from above but theres nothing there!

Could the leak be coming from the heater matrix?

I replaced it over the summer but as the dash is out I’ll be checking it. Water seems to be dripping from the centre of the tunnel and running down either side ... it sits outside and we’ve had a ton of rain too so hard to decide

Right. I havent updated here in a while so here goes!

The interior is pretty much finished!!! finally haha and i've pretty much sold all the old stuff now so very happy. Not something i would ever do again unless i really wanted to.

I was excited when this turned up... and glad my misses was away.
IMG_5889.jpeg
This is how it looks now... only half the centre console to find in brown. Turns out there are two types of Capri brown so i have various brown parts but its all good :D I think if i find lighter brown kick panels in the future it will match in.
IMG_5410 (1).jpeg
A few teething troubles with the indicators but i now have new LED bulbs in the dials and dash illuminations which i didnt have before. well chuffed.

Also, have a new pipe for the oil pressure so that works now. This time i used PTFE tape on both ends... no oil leaks.

At this point i'd like to thank Martin for all this help and finding all this brown joy! Cheers mate!!

Seen as i saw frost on the cars the other morning i thought it was time to do that coolant flush. Bit of a can of worms. Turns out there was no thermostat and the new hose (which is correct) doesnt seem to want to fit the alloy radiator so i guess i'll need one of the expensive aftermarket ones.
IMG_6091.jpeg
Next, i ordered some 2.8 Springs and started work removing the rear axle. Very excited i've made the decision to do it myself now, i was struggling to juggle the garage having a car with no rear end in that they couldn't move and the availability of bearings workshop not doing the axle in time. It also means i save a little money and get to use all my swear words. >:D

Not many photos of this procedure but i have filmed it all and will make a little youtube video to help other novices.

This was heavy to get into the boot of my Escort on my own :xd: Just about did it.
Screen Shot 2020-02-14 at 21.26.24.png
Glad to have these and get that rear end higher.
IMG_6448.jpg
I've bought a new break line and some braided break hoses as non of this looked in good condition. I have also bought a new rear gear box seal as its a bit of a mess.

I havent bought any new U bolts as they came off really easy and seem in good condition. I also have not bought any new rubber suspension saddle pads. I was also told they are not needed but, maybe someone could verify that for me? Also i have no lowering blocks (car is lowered at the front) so not sure how high it will sit at the back yet.... time will tell. if anyone has a photo of a capri on lowering springs and 2.8 springs with no blocks, im all eyes.

After all this it just needs tuning or the carb sorting out. I think the timing is a bit off or its running rich. Also thought about changing to a manual choke.

I was told by martin when I changed my rear axle the rubber saddle pads arent needed for the single leaf springs.

The Ghia interior looks the part and does look very good with the combination of vinyl roof, Mk2 bumper and the absence of the Mk3 lower side mouldings.

Are you going to continue the Mk2 Ghia homage with a Ghia type side plastic & chrome side strip and chrome side window surrounds ?

Slightly off topic but I've just flicked through the pictures and I'm sure that in the picture of the radiator, the hose that is shown as the top hose is in fact the bottom hose.

Hey Martin, was meaning to reply here. It is a top hose but I think the problem is its got an aftermarket Radiator on it and i think the top connection on that is a bit further away maybe. Its really stretched it out. Other than that i'm wondering if it has the wrong Pinto Thermostat housing on it, although it might not be any different in length. This might have been mentioned before but, I put my finger on where it comes up to.

I've not previously seen a Capri housing with the drain point that yours has. If anything I'd say yours might be a tad longer than standard, which could be why it has been fitted.

I havent replied here for a while. A lot has happened in the last few months and this car is finally on the road (ish). Since messing about with the top hose I ended up getting stuck into the brakes, Carb and Tappets in anticipation of the Car becoming Tax exempt in these coming weeks.

The brakes.

I decided I wanted to replace the hoses as I've had them collapse on older Escort plus, I didn't think it could harm the Capris poor brakes. I replaced the rear during the Axle refit and then set on the front two. Annoyingly the callipers turned out to be seized so, a I ordered a couple more M16s from Rally Design. I should have probably gone with the Ambassador reproduction ones in retrospect as the brakes are still shocking. Also, I learned from Martin that these are 3.0 legs to which I have no idea why! I've learned its going to make it expensive to upgrade the disks though. from what I've read, 4 pot callipers and vented disks are the way... anyway heres some pics.
IMG_0425.jpg
After this I took off the Carb to check out what was wrong with the Choke (Choke flaps stuck right up). I got it off had a quick mess and they seemed to fall back into place. I also re built the Auto choke unit and put it back on the Car... Kicked it up :D let it warm up, backed it up off the drive and just as I was getting off the drive a loud, metallic noise consumed the Car. I quickly turned it off and pushed it back. Long story short... After buying an endoscope and long magnet... i'd dropped a washer into the inlet which had travelled into No:1 piston. :wank:

IMG_0957.jpg
At this point I decided to take the rocker cover off and check the tappets (which I was going to do anyway). They all seemed fairly off and It was a lot easier to do that my daily mk3 Escort 1100. No1 valves seemed ok and I did a compression test to see how it was performing. I did this cold but everything seemed even.
IMG_1144 (2).jpg

I Also, decided to tidy up the cover in the standard Ford Blue. I did this to the Escort as well. Chuffed with how this came out.

After this and with a Carb kit on the way anyway I took the Carb back off, stripped It down (except for the linkages) and give it a good blast with Carb Cleaner. All the jets got a clean, new gaskets, O rings and Needle Valves.

Once this was back on the Car. I Cranked it over and on the 4th turn (and after completely shutting the Choke flaps) it burst into life!!

I gave it a good run around the local streets and was cuffed to see the temp gauge working!!

Great to give it a blast around the local streets!! and to hear no bad Diff noises!!! I'm very happy except for the brakes! I'll be letting a garage look at it before I start putting on the miles as I think this make good sense . The only thing is they are pretty much the same as before so, I'm guessing full of air or maybe the master cylinder is in need of a bleed. I remember driving a Capri at 19 and it was the same as this (from memory ) but, Driving at 25-30mph in between cars around here, I feel I'd struggle to stop quick. I've been reading about upgrading the front and wish I had done more with the callipers now but, I'm on a budget and I thought the seized callipers would be something to do with this. I just need to do some more test and figure out what I really want the garage to look at. I dont want to pay loads for an hourly rate for no change. I think this Car has a Landrover master cylinder on it so, I do wonder if the lad I bought it off got air in this as I couldnt get the air out of the system when I tried. I've heard of leaving something on the pedal over night. I guess you just crack the bleed nipple in the morning?

After this I'm going to enjoy the Car but, would like to get some Ghia wheels or something better fitting. I'd love to get a vinyl roof on it but need the trims for the gutter, extenders and trims for the boot. Not sure what i'll do on the bumpers... depends if I keep the car I guess.

You've been busy :D . Always good to read about how someones car is improving. Nice work on the interior & glad you got the temperature gauge working. Remember rebuilding with a carb kit years ago, brought back memories of a kitchen smelling of petrol before I was blessed with a garage.
I like the ghia look with the vinyl top, a set of ghia alloys to match would finish it off. As for the bumpers, for me I'd have the correct mk3 ones, trouble is they cost a bit if you havn't already got them. Each to their own though and I know some prefer the mk2 ones. Keep up the good work :goodluck:

You say you would like to fit a set of Ghia wheels - well if you're interested I have a set of 4 with centre caps but no bolts that I would let go very reasonably.

PM me if you're interested.
