Rear drums. These are leftovers from mk1’s too. They’re completely different to normal mk2 and 3 brakes.

Wiring loom for the engine bay next.

This was filthy but in perfect order underneath. The old tape had gone crispy from years of engine heat etc so I stripped the whole thing down and re-wrapped it.

Also waxed the cars cavities etc. I’ve used Dynax S50 for the box sections and inside panels etc. Anywhere that’s body colour and visible I’ve used the Dynax UB clear. I’ve splashed plenty of it on too to keep rust at bay.
This is the inside of the front valance and cross member area with the clear wax drying.

Cheers fellas. We’re not quite up to date yet either. I’ll post up more updates soon. There’s loads and loads more photos of the car and the work but I’ve condensed it down a fair bit, id be on here hours and hours posting them all!

Cheers everyone. I’ve been busy this week so haven’t been on here much but hopefully I’ll get a few more updates up to bring the thread up to date.
And since it’s a bank holiday weekend I’ll be getting more work done on the car. Weather dependent of course!

Bits & bobs and engine bay stuff next.

Got the front under bonnet radiator panel out, which was looking a right state so I ground it down to bare metal with a wire wheel in a grinder. Then used some rust remover gel to finish off any remaining rust spots the grinder missed. Followed that up with a good wash and then etch primer and satin black.

Then loads of bits started going back into the engine bay. Some old & refurbished, some new. I’ve even been cleaning and painting any old nuts/bolts/screws etc that didn’t get replaced so they looked good!
The engine bay wiring loom also went back into place complete with its little plastic sleeves that sit over the loom retaining tangs. Each and every one of them soaked in soapy water and scrubbed clean before going back on.
The radiator is actually a pair of Capri top and bottom tanks with a Cortina 2.3 core and tubes. These have slightly more capacity and fins than standard Capri ones so it should give a bit better cooling.

I couldn’t help myself so I put the front grill back in place! Just to see how it looked.
It was washed and treated with loads of black trim shine first. The clips and screws that hold it on are new. Behind it the wiring is all clipped in place ready for the headlights and indicators and there’s even a new old stock horn in there (old one was rotten and vibrated more than making a horn sound!).

The cabin loom is in really good condition so I opted not to disturb it by cutting the tape off and re-wrapping it. The wiring is all still ok and the old grey tape is still good, it’s still soft and clean still even. It just needs one or two connectors sorting out and a crappy new section for the radio needs cutting out and redoing properly. It’s ‘hung’ roughly in place for now while I do a few other things. I think I’ll get the dash back in before doing too much more with the wiring as that’ll help a lot with getting it routed properly and things back where they need to be.

Now to get this up to date,

I’ve also continued buying things I’m going to need. I’ve found you do need to keep a close eye on many different sources to get hold of certain things on cars like this. One particular thing I wanted to do with this car was find the correct mirrors! Yes, I know I’m terribly sad for going this far into things but I want it exactly how I want it!
Mk2’s without remote mirrors that were made between start of production upto about November 74 should have a specific type of door mirror. They were only used on mk2 Capri’s and looked similar to the mk1 type but were slightly different in shape. Sadly mine were missing before I got this car and it had instead the standard later mk2/3 mirrors. (mine being an L it only had the drivers door mirror at first). I like the original type though so I went on the hunt for them! They’re not easy to find though!
I will be putting a pair of mirrors on this car instead of the one as standard, it looks better in my opinion plus it’s safer having two!
I got them in the end! Both are new old stock, one came from Germany, one from a seller here who’d actually described it as a LH mirror but I spotted it wasn’t and bagged it! It was in fact the elusive RH one I’d struggled to find.

I got a new old stock pair of rear lights too! Both still in their boxes and complete with seals, bulb holders and even unused 1970’s bulbs. Got these from France.

And finally for now, today I started cutting to shape my new sound deadening heat reflective pads for the floors.

Loads of this still to finish. The rear seat area and boot need doing plus inside the doors and rear quarters etc. There’s still some trimming to shape etc to be done on the ones in the pics too.

Looking fantastic.
Always a great feeling sourcing NOS parts, especially as they'll be used to put such a wonderful Capri back on the road.
Nothing wrong with wanting correct parts either, ie the mirrors and safer to have a passenger one fitted too, IMO.

I did get a NOS headlight too but the idiot postman smashed it! It’d lasted all that time in its box sat on a shelf only for some ham fisted moron to ruin it.
