The "Barn Find" 2.8i

Post by Lukeyboy46 »

Good morning all,

I'm New to the forum and Capri ownership.

I bought the car about a year ago with no v5 and a few other car projects on the go, so I've resisted the temptation to start the Capri project and waited till I had the v5 in my hand and some more spare time. With that, here I am!

It's a White 2.8i with a brooklands leather interior in good condition, but the bodyshell has seen better days around wings, arches and sills. Shock tops, door hinges and floor pans seem OK! I had to try and start the car when I first got it, just out of curiosity, so as soon as I took delivery of the car I had to strip out a retrofitted thatcham alarm and fit a new starter. Sure enough though, she runs lovely and drives (ish)!

It will have a full strip down and rebuild and I intend to document my progress on here!

Hi,
Welcome to the forum! :welcome:
Firstly, congratulations on your fine choice of car. I'm sure you won't be disappointed with a Capri! :D

Your Capri doesn't look like a bad starting point for a full rebuild, I've certainly seen cars advertised as barn finds that are in much worse condition than yours.
I look forward to reading updates as this thread is updated. What sort of timescale have you set yourself to complete the work?

All the best,
Andrew.

Thanks Andrew!

I'm hoping it's not too bad underneath, it was a bit crusty when I put her on the ramps but not the worst chassis I've seen.

The intention is to restore her to very good but usable condition, I love to drive my classics, not just look at them.

I'm hoping by June next year to have some paint on it,but that depends on whether I sell a few of my other "projects"

Here's some of my completed cars I drive all the time for anyone that may be interested.

Ha yes! It would have been my preferred lump in the Capri as I have many spares!

But something different is never bad I suppose!

Nice collection of cars, glad you're enjoying them, bit of a fan of the scimitar, especially the Middlebridge ones.

Few questions if someone can help!

Is there a good known location for getting some patterm wings and inside and out sills? I've heard some are awful fitment.

It looks to have had a wing before, one side is bolted the other welded, can anyone tell me which is the original method?

Are there any bits in the car before i get carried away that I should be extra careful with removing/storing?

Looking at getting the shell soda/sand blasted to leave me with whatever is left.

Hi,
The wings should be welded on.
The pattern wings need a bit of jiggling, but you should be able to get an acceptable fit. It's all down to the skill of the person fitting them.
With the exception of Ex-pressed panels, I think I'm right in saying that the pattern wings from various suppliers all come from the same manufacturer, so don't be tempted into paying more than you should, thinking that you'll be getting a superior quality product.

All the best,
Andrew.
