Front Seat Belts: info or pics wanted

Post by Jackrabbit396 »

Hello everyone,

First, I´m new to the forum, and to european Fords, so forgive me if I say something not particularly brilliant.
Also, I searched on this topic, but searching for info on front seat belts regardless gives me a million threads on rear seat belts. If there´s some matching threads already, I look forward to some links!

I just bought last week a 1983 Capri Ghia. It´s in awesome condition, but de-registered and overdue on inspections. The one thing I can´t stand is that it has 4-point harnesses for the front seats, and the rear seats are therefore unusable. It´s extra awkward, in my opinion, because it doesn´t have racing seats or seats made for harnesses. The shoulder straps just go through the headrest and the seatback. Anyway, I would very much like to source some factory-type seatbelts, And install them.

Probably I will order some from the link below. (I´m in Germany)

But the bigger thing is, I´m not sure what all the pieces are which I need, or how they are originally mounted, especially the upper mounts on the B-pillars (or wherever). So it would be great if someone could post or point me to some pictures how the front seat belts mount up from the factory.

This is slightly more exciting because the car is not on hand, and I can only legally drive it to the inspection from where it is sitting. Also, it´s again extra fun because I´m trying to register it as a classic, so only original or period-correct modifications are allowed, in order to get the necessary certificate for the registration.

TLDR: need to know how stock front seat belts mount. Pics are greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,
Welcome to the forum! :welcome:
Do the seatbelt parts fitted have to be new in order for you to obtain the registration certificate?
If good condition used parts are adequate, I suggest buying the whole set-up from a Capri specialist in the UK, like Capri Gear or Capri Club International. Both will ship parts overseas.

If I remember rightly, there will be some bolts that screw into the B pillar. There's a top mounting that is around shoulder height, and a bottom mount just above the floor that contains the reel. There is also a bolt mounting on the centre tunnel for the buckle clamp thing (whatever that's called!). I think the passenger and driver side clamp things are different as they differ in length.
I'll try to get some photos of the mountings for you tomorrow. However, my car is parked in the garage, so they may not be the best quality.

All the best,
Andrew.

I'm pretty sure that 1983 is the later style with the bar along the inner sill. I have a complete set up in the 2.0 that I have in.

As in your link, you need a set of inertia-reel front belts similar to this photo but where there is a silver metal plate with bolt-hole at the top-right corner of the photo it must have a fabric loop at the end of the belt.

The reel bolts in behind the door-card void, out of sight.
The belt runs up behind the door-card and out of a plastic guide slot (shown in photo at top left corner) at the lower-front corner of side window.
The bolt hole half way up the B-pillar is for a metal guide slot so that the belt will loosely run through it.
The fabric loop is fixed to a metal slider-bar about 250mm long that has a return-bend at each end. This fixes to the inner sill where the carpet rises vertically, a strong bolt at the front just out from the front seat recliner hand-wheel, a rear screw just below the back of the B pillar.
Centre buckle bolts on the side of the transmission tunnel just behind the seat.
You will need to special bolts with washers so that the top guide moves.

Okay, I´ve got everything figured out except the bolt hole half way up the B-pillar.
Does it double as the lower trim screw?

Thanks for your help.
I will probably call these places in the UK which Andrew recommended, and get the whole scoop.

I have used front belts with all the stalks, bolts trims etc.... rail and fixed type, even a few of the earlier square clasp type.
