OCF 280 Resto From Sm Classic Cars

Post by elliecharlie2008 »

hi all
thought id catch up with whats going on at the min and whats in
this belongs to a member on here im sure some of you know the car or have seen it over the years
its a 1988 brooklands turbo with 38k genuine miles on it
pretty cool number plate too
ive know andy for a while and he asked me recently to bob up and have a look to see what i thought
it was two options really the car has been of the road for a fair few years but did run(with a whack of the fuel pump with a hammer lol)
nothing was siezed up as it had been moved around at his house
its a very nice car but it did have issues and for a car of its rarity it wanted to be right
the paint was nice but up close you could see blemishes where it had been re painted one of the rear arches was suspect same again on one of the ends of the sills
the front wings had been replaced at some point with pattern wings so the bonnet gaps were out as were the door gaps
the engine bay had been painted with the engine in and they had taped around the turbo plate and the yellow decal
there was a mis match of screws on the front
the side strips looked to be glued on
so the options were either sort the bits out or go for a full blown restoration
we decided to bring it to my workshop and have a good look and fire her in for a mot
after cleaning up the brakes and re filling with fresh fuel and changing some bulbs i sent her for mot
all was going well until one of the fuel lines burst lol
so it failed on that but i managed to replace it at the mot station and she went back in and passed

so with a full mot we had another chat about what route to go and it was decided to go all out and totally rebuild her
it seems me and andy are on the same wave length when it comes to cars were both a bit anal with things i sent him a list of the top of my head and he agreed with it
so the stripping out will begin monday and a list making up as we go along ie whats being replaced, powder coated, zinc plated etc
the pattern wings will be coming off and replaced with ford ones
the bonnet boot and doors are spot on and rust free
sunroof is stuck but ill sort that out
the boot floor and rear chassis legs are very good
drivers side front spring hanger has had a repair that dosnt look that good so that will be changed
both out riggers are crushed again they will be changed
the floors look good again will know better when its stripped
were going for all new underneath
front legs refurbished
rear axle stripping and rebuilt
engine will be stripped and a new seal/gasket kit fitted the engine is pretty dam clean too lol

its going to be quite a big project and definatly looking forward to it
i had a bit of a drive the day after the mot and it pulls really well all the drive train is nice and tight as you would expect for the mileage

so come monday ill have some more pictures of her as she is stripped

here some from when it came and after the mot

Hi Steve,
I think you are doing it the right :D
These cars deserve the best if possible, and from what Ive seen of your work this will be a GREAT car when done, and the owner will be one lucky chap.
Looking forward to seeing the progress on this one, even though it looks good as it is, with a name like Andy he wont be happy with anything less than perfection

Having never even seen a turbo'd 2.8 in the flesh, I'm curious what the lag is like on them?

I've driven a few other turbo cars from the same era and the lag made the whole drive quite terrifying. Not sure at what point coming out of a corner I was going to get a sudden boost of torque and it made my bum hole tingle, for want of a better analogy.

it seems to be a managable boost however i didnt really give it some round corners etc the fuel pipe incident at the mot station made me think otherwise lol

so monday the car was stripped out apart from the engine i totally forgot to get some pictures but i did today
went through the car and found all the faults that need attention and some more bits today
i cleaned off the paint on the engine bay and removed the front wings(pattern ones)
that revealed the headlight bowl tops had been messed with and were more filler than metal it also had three drip rails lol
the ends of the front valence where the wings bolt to have gone and been plated so the pattern wings were just but welded to to the valence

after cleaning of the strut tops that brought more filler out and holes so the strut tops are going to have to come off if its on top then its underneath
the front of the floors have been previously repaired with what looked like plaster of paris
the scuttle panel is very good barring a bit in the middle as are the a posts
the passenger side rear floor has a hole in in above the spring hanger section so that will be having new sections fitted
one end of the sill drivers side has been plated over and fillered
passenger side lower panel has a hole in it which has just been filled over
there is a couple of bits on the floor here and there and one inner arch has been repaired badly so thats coming out
other than that the rest looks pretty good
some kind person has welded all the exhaust together too lol

so cleaned out some of the old paint and pulled the engine out
heres some piccys
