Wiring Electric fan

Post by Craigorypeck »

Wiring up electric fan today and usually electrics are common sense but the diagram that came with the thermostat is incorrect.??. I think

So when wired this way via 87a supplying the fan, turn off the ignition and fan stays on all the time?
Works spot on with ignition on.

Any ideas?

i followed the above instruction when i installed a 1.3 fiesta fan and it works for me. note that the markings on the relay ares sometimes different to the actual positions of the spades.

My leccy fan is wired to the fuse box using the connector nearest the windscreen , the only down side is that the fan continues to operate for about 2 mins after the engine has been switched off... i did'nt use a switched live feed.

Use the switched live off the stereo wire as a feed otherwise in summer your batteries gonna go flat. The rad heats up a touch after engine is switched off due to no water flow which means your fan will stay on for ages after car is turned off...I know i've done it

Just to confuse you more, here's my favorite fan wiring diagram (stolen from fordpower)
I like it as it has an override switch and a light to tell you when they are on :)

That second diagram from the link seems the best way for me.. Makes alot more sense than the crappy one supplied. Ta P-man. Yours seems very involved Beakster! Thanks anyways :D
87a is just the opposite of 87 so when the relay shuts ie ignition off (to 86) the fans on all the time.. Think I'm gonna email the supplier, give off

On the basis that it shouldn't really get used so the switch won't burn out I went for the simple manual on/off switch approach  (Might bung a relay in there one day if I can be arsed)

Might help:

I found a suitable 'BOSCH' type relay in a jamjar in the shed with four pins - #85 is the activation power from the manual switch under the dash (the power-out from an automatic thermostatic switch will cut into this wire, when I find one will) #86 is the Earth for this side of the relay. When I flick the switch ON it makes the contact inside between the main power fromthe battery across to the power to the fan motor. #30 is the main power that works the fan, this comes directly off the battery +ve terminal which is only inches away from where I mounted the relay under the front slam panel, it must have a fuse in this wire such as an inline one from Halfords. #87 is the power going to the fan motor. The fan also has an earth connected to the bodywork nearby. I checked the two wires from the plug on the motor to see which way it needed to be to make the fan turn the correct way to blow air backwards through the radiator before cutting them to length.
This fan & housing came off a 1993 'L' plate Fiesta 1.1 along with the wiring. A couple of the fiesta radiator mounting rubbers came in handy for the bolt through the rad fins to stop vibration causing any wear, the shroud is a couple of millimetres off the radiator for the same reason although when spinning it doesn't vibrate noticeably

My problem is that the thermostat works the wrong way round as in when its at its lowest setting it should be on, but its off. And when turned up the fan switches on, where it should switch off. (using spade 87, the proper one)
Ive tried all the wiring diagrams, and wiring a relay is easy. But when i have to use a 5 pin relay having 87a as main power out here lies the problem!!!!

"SPDT Relays SPDT Relay : (Single Pole Double Throw Relay) an electromagnetic switch, consist of a coil (terminals 85 & 86), 1 common terminal (30), 1 normally closed terminal (87a), and one normally open terminal (87).

When the coil of the relay is at rest (not energized), the common terminal (30) and the normally closed terminal (87a) have continuity. When the coil is energized, the common terminal (30) and the normally open terminal (87) have continuity."

Works perfectly until ignition is turned of then 87a has continual power and fan is on all the time!!!

It's going in the bin....
