I`m sure The 2.9 can be differentiated by its 3 separate ports rather than the siamesed affairs on 2.3/2.8?
From the bewildering amount of info in the manual it seems the inlet valve head diameter is 39.7 -40 mm on the 2.3 (or less on earlier heads) and 41.85 - 42.24 on the 2.8. So basically if it`s got 42mm head it`s a 2.8, if it`s got 3 ports it`s a 2.9

Another way to tell the difference between the 2.3/2.6 and a 2.8 siamese port heads is the waterways on the head face.
The 2.3/2.6 heads, the waterways have a single curved slot on the exhaust side of the head and the 2.8 has two separate holes in the same position.
The head in the front is a 2.8 and the head at the back is a 2.3/2.6 head. 2.9 heads are easy they have 3 exhaust ports per head.

Just to fog things up a bit more; 2.8's imported to US have 3 exhaust ports only 2.6 had siamesed ports.

US 2.8 six port heads are easy to identify as they have a different inlet port configuration to the normal 2.3/2.6/2.8/2.9.

The top photo is a 2.6 and a 2.8 and yes the top head in the photo is a 2.6. The 2.3 and the 2.6 are very similar, the 2.3 is more common than the 2.6. As you can see the 2.8 has a lot of differences.
