..was thrashing it down to a mates this morning down a bumpy B road when I saw sparks coming out of the front offside of the bonnet!
Came to an abrupt halt and popped the bonnet to see the tab which holds the bonnet stay has broken and it was flapping around near the battery terminal
Very cheap plastic... it's only lasted 37 years!

That is scary! Doesn't someone do repro clips? Think I've seen some.

Yes, such poor quality materials
Reminds me when I broke the head off my dad's wooden spatula while cooking us a meal and he was all like "how have you managed that?"
"Just cooking dad."
"I've never managed to do that!"
I stopped and looked at him and say, "how long have you had it?"
He twigged and smirks, "only about 40 years."

What were Ron and Russell Mael doing in your engine bay in the first place?
Maybe not big enough for the both of them?
I'm glad they got out safely though
Andrew.

Glad it wasn't more severe Tom!
You can buy re-pro ones - mine snapped a few years ago as well. Was only £3 I think!

Yes seen some repros on ebay, thanks for the input fair gents. As a temporary measure I have taken the stay off and chucked it in the back.
I tentatively recreated the scenario at home as I was wondering how sparks came out of the offside when the battery is on the nearside. Course it conducted along the bonnet stay and jizzed out of the other end.
I don't trust this electricity stuff.
