Whining sort of noise....?

Post by D366Y »

This is quite a weird one/hard one to describe but recently in the laser there appears to be a much louder 'road noise' type of sound coming from the rear passenger-side-area

It isn't a crunchy noise, and I'm almost reluctant to call it a whine, sort of more along the lines of a low hum... Almost like road noise, but only happens when you get going and not at low speeds. Have tried to drop the clutch while going and it sounds (to me) pretty much exactly the same.

Do I jump straight into "it's the diff" or could it be anything else?
I have dug up this old thread which wasnt particularly conclusive https://www.fordcapriforum.com/forum/vi ... =Diff+loud

But I havent touched or adjusted anything at that back end in a few years and have just been driving it.
The diff cover was changed I think 2019/2020 Ish as it had a pin-hole leak so took it off and filled it with new oil and a gasket but nothing since

Any thoughts would be most welcome!
Thanks as ever
Danny

Rear wheel bearing would be the first thing to look at in my view.

What's the giveaway with wheel bearings? I don't think I've ever changed any of them but happy to do so if it's just a case of taking the old ones out, slapping them a shitload if grease and putting the new ones in?

Cheers

I always thought that noisy wheel bearings sounded like more of a drone than a whine.

Yeah , I could have had a bit of fun with this one ....whining poms an all that 😁
Jasons mother in law in the back seat.....but I wont
Rear wheel bearings usually have a bit of "rumble " being as they are a relativly low speed bearing.
The diffs on these cars have a bit of a habit of loosening the pinion shaft nut allowing a slight mis-allignment of the crownwheel/pinion . Have a good wriggle of the pinion flange ( like try to rip it right out of the diff .....dont be gentle )and see if there is any play there. If there is its usually worse on over run . And when it gets bad enough , on over run it can pull the pinion far enough into the diff so it hits the diff centre.........and then leaves the pinion and some chunks of cast iron in an oily puddle on the road ........it was a mk5 Cortina ......basically same diff.
Sometimes I talk to myself ... and we both have a good laugh

Is it totally constant, like an "auwwww" or is it more resonating, like a rhythmical, even gentle "awww..wwawww..wwawww"? Or does it sort of do both at different road speeds?

What road speed does it appear at? Does it get louder or disappear as you go faster or slower?

While it is possible to change rear wheel bearings yourself without a press, it's much easier to get a garage to do it.
If you want to save some money, you can do the stripdown yourself and just take the halfshafts somwhere that has a hydraulic press.

Good luck with finding the source of the noise, I hope it's an easy fix :goodluck:

If it is from one side I would say wheel bearing. You could take the half shaft out (wheel bearing is attached to it) and swap it with the other Capri and see if it goes away.

To answers Tom's questions it probably is more of a drone as Paul suggested rather tha a fluctuating noise, and appears probably att around 45-50 Ish as a start?

I'd also say it gets louder the faster it goes...

How difficult are half shafts to change and I can consider changing it to see if it works

Thanks
Danny

Reason I ask is that mine made a droning noise for ages, I assumed it was the diff, then oil leaked from the half shafts so I swapped the whole axle with a spare.

Still did it

Centre bearing going to be changed next. Did sound more like it was coming more from the passenger side and more from the rear though :headscratch:

Hi mate,

Your going to need a half shaft puller - those SOB'S are in there proper tight, as for the bearing itself your going to need a press, IIRC correctly those bearings are pressed on the half shaft at 1200 psi - not a DIY operation unless you happen to have a press laying around.

It's a bit scary but the half shafts are held in by only 4 small bolts. Sometimes, with bolts removed, they will come out with a good tug but, as Wayne suggests, they can be a bit stubborn and you will need a slide hammer. As an alternative I have put an old brake drum on the shaft mounted back to front and given it a good clout with a lump hammer!

I have also fitted bearings at home substituting a big hammer and length of scaffold pole for a press but a press is probably best practice!

Like Peter, I've also changed a bearing myself. Just be careful when removing the old bearing not to grind a groove in the half shaft with the angle grinder.

On the subject of removing the half shaft:
If, like me, you don't have a slide hammer, the threaded holes in the backplate can be used to remove the half shafts from the axle. Just use two long bolts inserted from the inside facing outwards to push on the half shaft securing plate. Easy-peasy!

I think it was Haydn_gnarlerboy on here that used some method of jacking to get the half shaft out. He said something about running for cover when it finally came flying out directly upwards.

Good advice there, I cut a little groove in one of mine years ago, wasn't paying attention :(

And +1 on the two long bolts method πŸ‘

I like that idea with the 2 bolts - not sure anything on these cars these days is easy-peasy though :cigar:

I had a similar problem when I bought my Capri. It was a really loud road noise like as if you were dragging a garden roller behind the car. The garage I took it too said it was the diff so I took it off and drove it over to Southern Axles in Watford. The replaced all the bearings in it as apparently everything was shot.
Its been great but I recently had a half shaft bearing go leaving oil all over the passenger wheel. It was whining more on corners which was the first sign. I was going to do the halfshaft bearings myself but working on the road and the prospect of not getting the bearing fully out with a slide hammer I gave it to a garage.

Hi mate, quick question, are Southern Axles still there? Only asking as I have been looking for a good axle specialist that's reasonably local to me.

Haha, you're probably right, although getting the half shafts out really is easy. Especially if they have been removed fairly recently.

On the subject of bearings...
It's been said many times before but it's worth reiterating. Make sure replacement bearings are the correct type with the rubber oil seal. Otherwise oil will leak past them into the brake drums.

This was Feb 2020 so just before the pandemic. A quick google says they're still open. He wanted me to take it down as a unit being the Atlas Axle. I think if its an English Axle they could do it in the Car. Great service and prices werent too bad for the London area (I think).
