Ive changed the front suspension on my Capri and now have a knocking noise that i'm trying to eliminate. My main question is: whats the best way to test Top Mounts?
I took it for wheel alinement today and they think it could be top mounts (they checked the ball joints etc) but, i'm wondering if its the lug nuts possibly as its a constant circular noise. The new wheel stud threads stop short for the steel wheels. Although i've fitted nuts without a back and got them down as tight as possible I'm wondering if its that. It does make a lot of noise cornering hard and when I took out last sunday it didnt seem that noisy.

Re: Testing Top Mounts?
I'd eliminate that before suspecting anything else, if its worst when cornering it could be the wheel writhing around on the studs if the nuts aren't able to tighten down properly against wheel. Are they wheel studs for alloys? Have you got access to alloy wheels you could slap on quickly to see if thats it?CapriFreak wrote: ↑Fri Nov 12, 2021 9:54 pm The new wheel stud threads stop short for the steel wheels. Re: Testing Top Mounts?
I'm guessing they must be? I dont know if these new struts are from a laser or something. At the moment I've got open ended nut tightened down pretty hard. the drivers side is fine but passenger still seemed a bit off until a few more turns on a breaker bar. I'll take it for a drive soon to check. I think there still might be a few other noises in there .

Re: Testing Top Mounts?
right my problem was the wheel wasnt seated correctly. I need to sort them lugs out or get some wheels that fit these lugs

Re: Testing Top Mounts?
Glad it was a simple fix. I think studs are readily available from numerous sources if you need to change them.

I'll never forget when I changed my slotmags to wider superslots.. the nuts seemed to fit perfectly. 6 months later I popped the top off one of them when doing them up and I was horrified to discover there was only about 5mm of metal holding the wheels on.

I flogged a set of slotmags years ago. Was that to you? Can't remember?Major_Tom wrote: ↑Mon Nov 15, 2021 1:49 pm I'll never forget when I changed my slotmags to wider superslots.. the nuts seemed to fit perfectly. 6 months later I popped the top off one of them when doing them up and I was horrified to discover there was only about 5mm of metal holding the wheels on.
