Capri hot start problem
Hi folks new to the page. My brother bought a 1984 capri 1.6 LS pinto with a vv carb.
He bought the car to restore and he sadly got very ill and past away last year at the age of 43. He never got the car finished. So in his memory I finished the car and got her on the road. I am having trouble with hot starting I'm pretty sure it's vapour lock. So the question is, where can I get a fiber insulator gasket for the carburetor. I have looked up ebay etc and can't find it anywhere. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome to the forum.
That's a sad story. You're doing a wonderful thing by finishing the car in your Brother's memory, I really hope you are able to find the gasket that you require.
There's a few sellers on Ebay that have a VV gasket set, don't they contain the gasket that you need?
Have you also tried contacting the Capri specialists for the part? If they aren't able to supply one, they may be able to point you in the right direction. Good luck.
It would be great to see some photos of the Capri.
Andrew.

Re: Capri hot start problem
Welcome to the forum, sorry to hear about your brother. I don't know how experienced you are obviously, so please forgive me if this is obvious to you, but you are aware of the start up procedures on these cars? For instance, for a warm/hot start you would usually hold the accelerator part way down for an easy start. when hot, such as after just stopping for petrol etc. then you should get away with doing nothing. Certainly I've never heard of anyone having to fit a special carb gasket. The standard ones are freely available.
Re: Capri hot start problem
I have replaced the VV with a Weber carb and manual choke on my Sierra 1.6 Pinto.
That could be an option as it's great on fuel too
and also sorry for your loss!

Re: Capri hot start problem
Thanks folks. I do have the standard gasket. But when I stop the car and leave it for 5min or so the carb gets really hot. I have heard alot about this vapour lock so I thought that might be the problem. The gasket I'm looking for is 1/4 of a inch thick. I also didn't know about starting with a half throttle, thanks for that, I will try it tomorrow.
I have tried to put up pictures of the car but is says attachment too large. Any tips for posting pictures?

You can reduce the picture size first if you have some software to do it - there's free stuff out there, or see hereMartin Capri wrote: ↑Sun Oct 17, 2021 3:09 pm I have tried to put up pictures of the car but is says attachment too large. Any tips for posting pictures?

Re: Capri hot start problem
Thanks Andrew. I can't take all the credit, my brother had it 90%. I only done the Final touches.
He had cancer and he worked on the capri up until a month before he past away. Im gutted he never got a drive in it.

Re: Capri hot start problem
Hi again folks. Glad you liked the pictures of the capri.
I tried hot starting it with the throttle half way and still won't start when hot. When she cools down it starts fine.

Re: Capri hot start problem
After all the good work done bringing the car up to such a looker its a shame to have engine hassles , As andyd has said about his replacing the VV with a 32/36 weber and manifold ..... it will transform the car
Sometimes I talk to myself ... and we both have a good laugh
