Pedantry time.... If the Mustang isn’t a V8 is it not a 4cyl 2.3 turbo (basically detuned Focus RS engine)? The yanks got a n/a 3.7 V6 as their entry level engine but it was never available here, and seems a bit pointless tbh.

I can recommend the new Mustang, it’s too long to fit in my garage though which helped sway me towards the RS. I’d like to try the latest GT with the 10-speed box, it’s meant to be very good.
Ahhh maybe that's where I was confused, will bow to your superior Ford knowledge. Didn't realise it was detuned though, what's the reasoning behind detuning an engine to put into a heavier car?

For past year I’ve been running this as a daily, and I can’t get enough of it. It’s partly why I’ve barely used the Capri, which I like just as much. Nothing sounds as good as a V8 but I’m well impressed with this Custom turbo model. This :ford: going to stay with me with for the foreseeable.
That does look nice. My mate likes his too!

Standard Ford logic!

From memory the 2.3 in the Mustang puts out around 280-300bhp ish, but the exact same engine in the Focus RS puts out 350bhp.

I think it probably has something to do with being more economical and good for the environment rather than making it super sporty...? I mean if you wanted power you'd just buy the V8 I guess?

Some would call me a sad act! :geek:

There are quite a few mechanical differences between the engines, the RS version has a different turbo, cylinder head, intercooler and various other bits. I’m guessing the upgraded parts were required to make the necessary power (350 then 375 horsies) reliably in a car that was built to be thrashed.

Yes as much as we love V8’s on here, if the EcoBoost came with 350bhp I can imagine a lot of buyers opting for it over the 5.0. As it is, there’s a big enough gap in performance to justify the price and running costs if you’re that way inclined.

Incidentally, the new Focus ST also uses this engine, in that car it makes 280bhp.

Nah it’s a typical direct injection turbo, mountains of mid-range torque and the power tails off at 6000rpm so there’s no point going to the red line (although it has funky shift lights if you do!). It sounds ok, plenty of pops and bangs from the exhaust, but the MK2 with the 2.5 5 cylinder wins on sound, they sound amazing!
