Breakdown Cover

Post by andyd »

Hi all,
Just recieved this email from Start Rescue Breakdown;

"Policy Renewal

Dear Mr Down,

This is a reminder that your Vehicle Breakdown policy is due to expire in 30 days time.

startrescue.co.uk are unable to offer you a renewal on the vehicle(s) listed on your policy due to either the age of the vehicle(s) or the vehicle classification. Therefore, all cover under this policy will expire on 01/10/2020 at 00:01:00."

So can anyone recommend a breakdown company for the Capri? Home Start, Roadside and Relay is all I require :cool:

I've got the RAC personal cover whereby I'm covered on anything I drive or am a passenger in. Just have roadside and recovery, not homestart.

It's quite expensive at about £140.

Thanks Paul,
The Mrs has our Focus covered with Start Rescue, they obviously think old cars are going to be a hassle but the Capri gets better care than the Focus :lol:

My insurers don't offer breakdown, I'm half tempted not to bother considering the mileage I cover, but I know if I haven't got it I'll need it :doh:

Got this quote; £87.36 Green Flag Recovery Plus

Roadside assistance Get 24/7 help if you ever breakdown, including a tow to a nearby garage if we can’t repair your vehicle on the road.
Unlimited callouts You can call us out as many times as you need. Please note, we may charge you for multiple callouts for the same problem.
Cover at home We’ll come to the rescue if you breakdown at your home, or within ¼ mile from it.
National recovery We’ll take you, your passengers, and your vehicle to a place of your choice in the UK. If your breakdown is caused by a flat or damaged tyre, a 10-mile limit will apply. With Recovery Plus, there’s a 20-mile limit if you breakdown at home.

Hi Andy,
That's a bit of a blow. Presumably, if you're already been covered with Start they must have recently changed their terms and conditions to exclude cars over a certain age.
Like Paul, I've got personal cover with the AA but I've got a package that includes relay and homestart. It is relatively expensive when compared with some of the lesser known providers, however, from my experience their service is very good. I recognise that with the AA you have to pay extra for going with a recognised brand, but I think it's worth it for peace of mind. I suppose what you decide to do depends on your own circumstances.

Hi Adrew,
I checked the renewal price a couple of months ago and it was around £100 up from £48 :o :o So I was expecting some sort of change to be around the corner.

I joined the AA several years ago after they brought me and a mate home from Santa Pod when his RS Escort broke down, but the price increase was quite high so went elsewhere. You almost want to breakdown to get your money worth :lol:

Found another company for just under £60, so might give that a go. As with insurance you never know how good thy are until required!

Another email received;

"Whoops, sorry for the email!

Some of our customers received the wrong renewal email communication today.

You will receive an email with the correct renewal information within the next 24 hours.

Thanks for all your support.

The plot thickens :headscratch:

You can buy a cheap cover from Halfords for £20. Don't know why you'd put it on a broken down car though :whistle:

Funny name for a breakdown company... START then Rescue. Jesus if they were chasing Tom down the motorway trying to rescue him from his started capri they'd stand no bleedin chance :lol: :lol: :wave: :sorry:

Seriously though Andy that's a very decent price mate. And this is for National Relay too.?? Very good :)

Broke down today actually, ran out of electricity again! Turned off the engine at a level crossing and didn't have the amps to start up again! Really must sort this alternator wiring out :lol:

I always carry jump leads and fortunately my mate wasn't too far away, was moving again 20min later. Got some right dirty looks from one or two people that clearly assumed I had just pulled up for a rest or something :lol:
