Vibration on my 2.8
Hello all.
Problem that is driving me crazy.....
Always had a vibration when accelerating but I lived with it. Then had propshaft reconditioned, new engine and gearbox mounts and even flexible sections on exhaust. Now, not only is it worse but when you rev engine in neutral it vibrates through the body.
Would be grateful for any advice.... paul

Is the exhaust or its hangers touching the body or axle at any point on the system?
Are you sure the new mounts you fitted are good?
Does the vibration get better or worse when you press the clutch and are there any noises coming from this area?
Have you changed the oil recently and used a decent 20/50 oil? Is oil pressure OK and no excessive noises or rumbling coming from the bottom of the engine. Grab the bottom pulley and push it in and pull it out to check for crank endfloat.

Thanks for that. All mounts good along with exhaust and oil pressure. I will try the bottom pulley as that had crossed my mind...

Just to confirm, are you sure it's a mechanical vibration, not a misfire?
If it happens on acceleration and revving, even in neutral, I think you should rule that out first.
Sounds very similar to what I used to experience when the dizzy cap was getting old and worn.
New plugs, rotor arm, dizzy cap, tune it up, take an average CO reading across the two pipes and adjust the mixture to read 2.8% as an average across the two. One side will be weaker than the other. Years of experience taught me that is a good figure, otherwise, if you set it to 1.5% you may find one bank is extremely lean. I believe several others have followed this advice in the past and had very good results.
Once you are sure it's not an engine running issue than you can dive into the big mechanical stuff.

Similar to what Martin (Bug) has said above, I used to have a juddering when setting off in 1st only, higher revs would help with it so I just lived with it for a while intending to sort it another time, thinking clutch/flywheel, etc.
But I changed the spark plugs recently, and did nothing else, and it completely went away.

2.8s are lovely to drive and were, in their day, very quick cars. To get that, they had to be set up perfectly so think a decent top end spruce up. Plugs, leads, dizzy cap, rotor arm, the lot. Valve clearances (quickly mess up tune if they're wrong on the 2.8),timing, then set up the fuelling (which is tricky). Then the car should run nicely, and be quick, without misfire or vibration. If not, then look at the more mechanical stuff as Bug says. Why I always preferred pintos...the cologne injection is fiddly to keep running right.

When ,or if you follow the good advice above ,if possible replace one part at a time so as to find out which part is faulty . Plug leads are likely offender often overlooked because they can be faulty whilst still looking brand new . I spent an embarrassing amount of effort and time overlooking dodgy plug leads ....even fitted a new coil ,which worked for a bit till the leads deteriorated further . They can be tested with the multi meter.
Sometimes I talk to myself ... and we both have a good laugh
