Capri gearbox oil leak

Post by antonio31 »

Hello,

I have a problem with my gearbox (Ford Capri mk1 with 4 speed gearbox). I changed the rear oil seal and it still leaking through the propshaft (like in the photo). Is there any cover or something in that hole? I replace the oil from the gearbox and almost half has been gone from that area.

Thanks for your help.

Cheers!

Seems odd to me , but if your sure thats where it's coming from. I would remove the yoke from the u joint and have a real good look at the end of the spline tube. It should be sealed off . I got a hazy memory that an old 3litre drive shaft I have has a disc welded over the end of that hole. Maybe clean it up ( looks ok) ,hold it open end up and tip a bit of crc in there to see if you can spot the leak , might be just a pin hole you could put a blob of weld on :)

Another thing to check is the sleeve in the rear of the gearbox. Put the propshaft back in and see if there is a lot of play in this. The bush/sleeve can be replaced so long as you can still get one for that gearbox type.

Hello,

Thanks for your answers. I found a picture on Google and seems that I should have a plate in that hole. I checked on mine and there is nothing. I will try to weld something there.

Thanks again.

Regards,

Antonio

I think this seems more likely, sounds like oil has dripped it's way down to the yoke and making it appear as if it's coming from the prop.

Exactly that. My gearbox is always mildly incontinent, and it can look like a leaky diff as the oil travels some considerable way.

Sounds like Antonio has found the problem guys .
Have to agree that oil from a leaking prop shaft seal travels a fair way , mine made it all the way to the rear number plate (oil spots all over the back of the car ,which were easier to see in all the dirt  ).....and the exhaust on the way there .....which explained the burning oil smell whenever I stopped in traffic
