2.8i cutting out won’t run
Re: 2.8i cutting out won’t run
So been away for a few days, coming back to the issues with a clearer head.
I’ve tried the earth and it seems fine have tried in different spots, the wires have 12.2V coming to them but with the pump running it will only read 10.5V is this right or do we expect the fuel pump internals could be issue? It is a brand new pump but I’m starting to think it’s worth buying a different one?
Again thank you all for taking the time to help me out

Re: 2.8i cutting out won’t run
Its a real simple thing to do and bloody hard to explain here , like I could show you in a couple of mins if you were here, honestly your better off googling it as they would be much better at explaining than me , its a real handy way of diagnosing poor connections in a circuit , like plug in connectors that have corroded inside , faulty switches or damaged wires or poor earths.
EVERYBODY that owns a capri should know how to do this as older cars and motorbikes suffer from these faults a lot.

Re: 2.8i cutting out won’t run
So I’ve sorted the fuel with a new good quality pump, still the same outcome.
Still runs for few seconds and turns off I think it has to be something electric breaking down shutting the pulse from the coil off or somesthing
Is there anyone out there either Capri wiz or auto electrician that will know way around a Capri I could hire
Really appreciate all the help
Cheers again

Re: 2.8i cutting out won’t run
What age is your 2.8i?
The very early (81/82) 4-speed models had a cut out switch on the metering head so that if the engine stopped in an accident, it didn't keep on pumping fuel.
A wild stab in the dark, but something else to discount. Will be an electrical connector on it; from vague memory somewhere near the front of the metering head, near the inner wing.

And another daft question...............
Is the air pipe from the metering head to the throttle body fitted correctly?
Very easy to get it a little bit out on the metering head end, then when you tighten the jubilee clip it pulls it out of shape and lets air in round the side.

Re: 2.8i cutting out won’t run
And having read back through your previous checks, it seems you still only got 800ml through with 12v on the pump. I'm sure I remember it as being a minimum of 930ml required?
So, another common issue to check. The fuel pipes pass through holes in the outriggers. If the car is jacked up using a trolley jack on these points they can deform and crush the pipes, restricting flow.

Hi Oipallett,
Try running it without the fuel tank cap on.

I’m located around Rutland area, a fresh set of eyes could be the best thing
Re: 2.8i cutting out won’t run
I had a similar problem with my 2.8, it would run for a second or two and cut out, after a lot of parts and messing about itturned out to be a faulty duraspark module. Anyone near you could borrow one from to test?
Re: 2.8i cutting out won’t run
Hoping we soon get an update??
Re: 2.8i cutting out won’t run
Sorry for the radio silence, But I have GOOD NEWS
Got a auto electrician out to go over piece by piece turned out to be the switch love on the started and the live it wasn’t getting live power so when the switch live switched over to the live it wasn’t getting power so cut the coil off
Strange diognosis but I’m glad it’s there just need to button it up now and it’s complete!
Thank you all for your time

Thanks for letting us know. Sorry, I kind of lost exactly which bit you mean? (switch love on the started??) Do you mean the actual ignition switch?

I think it should read 'switched live on the starter' or similar Martin, autocorrect in action maybe?

Re: 2.8i cutting out won’t run
I think maybe the ballast feed to the coil was crook but the ballast bypass off the starter solenoid does work thus the car would run as long as the key is held in the start position........maybe
