Oh dear, I hope it's not too badly damaged and can be repaired.

What's the likely cause of that then do you think?

Having seen them deteriorate pretty quickly I would put money on perished fuel pipes.

I wonder if he carried a decent fire extinguisher?

:agree: Either perished or Mr Ethanol has been having a munch on them.

Or, as happened to me twice, on different Capris, with the 32/36 carb, the metal fuel inlet pipe can come out of the carb. It then fires the fuel in a perfect arc over to the exhaust manifold.

Not saying it's happened in this case, but as it has reminded me of the fault, now would be a good time to let you all know, so maybe you can check yours.

It doesnt look like the bonnet has been bent so it seems the firemen went to the trouble of opening it with care!

Craparama ! Mine got loose enough to leak so I pulled it out ,sand swaged it a bit and liquid metal glued it back in . Never thought about it coming right out tho

I read somewhere that the Scimitar boys used to some how drill and pin that small pipe into the 38dgas carburetor body, that pipe popping out is apparently quite common and is responsible for quite a few Scimitar fires and no doubt a few Capri's too.

if memory serves Reliant issued a notice on this issue, just can't remember where I read it.

Often happens that people see the smoke and immediately rush round and open the bonnet. In goes a lot of nice oxygen and the flames flare up!
Then they drop the bonnet and run!
Best bet is to carry an extinguisher with you. Pop the bonnet, lift it the bare minimum to get the nozzle in, fill the bay with the entire contents and hope for the best.

That is a superb heads up and info Martin. I guess the same could be true of the fuel return also? Could you clarify please, are these pipes simply a push in friction fit then?

In my experience yes Paul.

The one in my old carb came out a couple of times when I pulled the rubber hose off :o

Thanks very much Peter, that's another frequent under bonnet check then for sure.
