Series/Box Sets Worth Watching

Post by mjcapri »

Firstly, I’m not suggesting anybody should stockpile DVD’s....

However, as some of us may end up spending more time indoors than we’d like I thought it would be interesting to discuss our favourite TV programmes. There are a couple of series I’ve never watched but keep meaning to download as they are meant to be very good. Conversely I thought COBRA looked like it would be good but was rubbish (although Newton Aycliffe got a mention!). So what’s worth watching that people may not have seen? (Mods - lengthy ban please for anyone who suggests Love Island!)....

A few to start:

Snowfall on BBC 2 is very good, there have been 3 seasons to date. It’s set in 1980’s LA during a crack epidemic and follows various characters involved in said epidemic. It’s well worth a watch.

The Bridge is a Scandinavian crime series, it’s subtitled but don’t let that put you off you soon adapt to watching and reading at the same time. We actually watch a lot of foreign crime dramas, the Scandinavian ones in particular are quite good.

Before We Die (another Scandinavian crime drama).

Der Pass. This one is German, unsurprisingly.

Presumably everybody has heard of the likes of GOT and Pleaky Blinders so the above are slightly more obscure suggestions, but feel free to share anything you think may be of interest.

I haven't.

I'll stick to watching BTCC season reviews.

Project Binky on youtube. If you've never seen any then you are in for a treat because there are many hours to get through, they started it nearly 5 years ago and I think are at episode 30 now.

Yep, we find that, if they`re foreign they`re generally worth watching. Fed up of endless US crime stuff, they churn that out like McDonalds!

Cheers Mark, I've watched one episode so far - noticed Newton Aycliffe and thought of you ;) - so now do I bother with the other 5? Guess I mught have some time anyway as things look at present.

Watched 'Eight Days' recently - a German series about a pending devastating meteor strike. Worth a look I thought.

I only watched the first couple of episodes to be honest as I just couldn’t get into it. I’m not sure why but it had a ‘budget’ feel and wasn’t as gripping as it should have been. Don’t let me put you off though, you may like it.

Gomorrah is one of the series I need to start watching, it’s supposed to very good.

I do watch the professional Masterchef actually Nick, one of the better reality TV shows!

The original 80s British series 'Edge of Darkness' is excellent.

Go onto youtube and look for the VHS Rallies channel.

Many memories brought back there. I remember Tony Mason interviewing Gwyndaf Evans when he was driving the bus.

I hadn't realised until reading the comments that the legend that is Russell Brookes has sadly passed away.
RIP Russell.

Great footage, but for sheer seat of the pants excitement, you can't beat Ari Vatanen and Terry Harryman's "Dear God" moment on the '84 Manx!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l19F2YPVey0 at 2:00. As the footage goes on, notice how fast Vatanen is still driving, despite having that puncture!

I must have written my post in a hurry, as I meant to say "edge of the seat" not " seat of the pants" !
Great clips there too Rob. The trouble with YouTube is once you get into watching suggested videos you can be on the for hours.

I only watch 70s, 80s and 90s rally. Ford, Lancia, Toyota, Subaru etc as not interested in the modern cars.

I like rally cross too that always looks fun :drive:

Currently watching the old I Claudius.. bit of a slow starter, cheap sets, but acting is fantastic and, honestly, content and story wise pisses all over Game of Thrones. Its brutal!

Been watching Rust Valley Restorers on Netflix & Rust to Riches. Something different from the norm, first one better IMO, doesn’t take itself too seriously.
