Door mirrors

Post by Dallas »

Hi, My passenger side door mirror is the chunky type, its missing its glass and mechanism. I was debating to somehow fix it with new glass as I can't seem to find a reasonable replacement mirror. :o

Hi,
Reproduction passenger door mirrors are available for Capri Club International.
https://www.capriclub.co.uk/Passenger_D ... --457.html

If you want a used original one, I would try Martin at Capri Gear.

Thanks ;)
I have three holes all in a line in my door for the mirror fitment :o I guess the first two holes are for the UK spec slim mirrors, and the third hole is for the chunk mirror.

The first and third hole are currently in use that holds the chunky mirror, the middle hole is redundant (middle hole must be for the slim spec mirror).

My question is... If I fit a slim mirror, will the base plate still cover up the third hole?

I'm pretty sure the base plates are the same for both mirrors..

There wasnt a 'chunky' passenger side mirror.

The passenger side mirror should have a bog standard manual mirror where you have to move the head of the mirror to the correct angle until it's right then wind the window up- as per the link you have been sent to the CCI website.
Anything else there can only be an aftermarket thing put on by a previous owner. its best binned and replaced with a standard one.

The driver's side on a Laser, an S, a Ghia or a 2.8i should have a larger mechanical remote control mirror. Lower spec capris through had the same basic plain manual mirror there too.

I must have a left hand drive drivers mirror on my passenger side, or a London fairway taxi N/S door mirror.

I've had the door-card off, there are 3 holes all in a line, and I'm sure if I fit the correct standard slim mirror, I will have the third hole showing.

Isn't the third hole between the two fixing holes? The base of the mirror curves at the bottom to cover the larger centre hole.

I also found these:

Hi Andrew, I've had the door card off, and there are 3 holes all in a line level with one another. The first and third hole are currently being used, I would imagine the first and second hole is used for the slim mirror.

Once a slim mirror is fitted, I would imagine the smaller baseplate will not cover the third end hole.

Is it possible you have a left hand drive left door and the middle hole is for the cables that adjust the drivers ( left hand drive )mirror from the door mounted joystick. Both the mirrors on my crapi look the same from outside but only rhs has the adjustable bit . A good glasier should be able to cut you a bit of mirror glass , and grind the edges smooth . I just had some round bits cut for old amp and volt meters ( big 200mm industrial jobs ) I am restoring that had broken/cracked glass.
Sometimes I talk to myself ... and we both have a good laugh

I took another look today and have noticed the N/S door mirror is different, its a different shape and size, its actually larger than the O/S one. Its looks the same from a distance, but on closer inspection its larger and shaped different. :o

Also, on the base plate there is a bolt head on show (wing side), the base plate is shaped/moulded incorporating a hole. If you look at the photo in my first post you can see a bolt head to the left of the mirror, so am I correct is saying Capri mirrors do not have bolt heads showing on the base plate?

Is it safe to say this is neither a Capri mirror, or a london taxi mirror?

I seem to remember seeing these mirrors with the screw or bolt on mk2 escorts, so if that’s correct you could have a mirror from a left hand drive mk2 escort. Anyway to solve your problem here is one for sale, I suppose it depends how much you want one, pretty rare stuff hence the ££

A handful of owners just put them on as an after market thing.

Fairway Taxi remote mirrors were popular back in the day as they were just about the only available remote mirror which could be quickly fitted to any car without modification. Everything else had purpose made mirrors that bolted onto a triangular plate just in front of the window glass. They were made for that car and wouldnt fit anything else. A look at photos of a Mk5 Cortina vs a Mk 4 shows what i mean.

Fairway mirrors hardly ever come up on Ebay. There are more owners of old Fairway taxis looking to buy mirrors than there are Fairway mirrors for sale.

As anm alternative you could look for Jaguar XJ mirrors- these are chrome, there may be some back ones around if you search

Ok, I've made some headway with this N/S mirror problem that I'm having, why is nothing ever easy?

The easy solution would have been to buy a new mirror from Martin, this is what I was originally going to do, but due to my mirror being a chunky London Taxi/Escort/Left hand drive/??? with a wider bolt pattern, I would have been left with a hole showing in my door.

My next step was to search for a similar chunky replacement, but these mirrors seem to be as rare as hens teeth.

So I put my mind to fixing the one that I have, even though my mirror has no glass, no back-plate and no moving mechanism. My first thought was to see if I could buy a drivers door mirror to use as a donor, and my luck was in as I found one selling on ebay as 'spares or repair', the mechanism was broken, but the glass and back-plate was good.

I then had a brainwave and thought I could fabricate the up/down/left/right mechanism using household hinges, by putting one hinge on top of another hinge and rotating the second hinge should give me the up/down, left and right movement, at least the glass could be positioned manually just like a regular old school mirror.

In my head the design made sense, so I gave myself the task and put my plans into action, and so far with a few changes along the way its all come together nicely, see what you think.

Don't forget, you wont see any of the hinges once the mirror is put back in its housing. 8-)

I've had to drill four extra holes into the back-plate so I can gain access to the screws to be able to secure it all in place using the original threaded holes, then I can stick the glass in place using 3M tape, job done. :guitar:

More to the point though, this is a nice bit of problem solving with that hinge arrangement.
