Fan Belt size

Post by Synn »

Hi guys,

My fan belt snapped saturday night, i'm rushing to get another one while places are still open

what size do i need? the one thats on it says 863 or something, hard to tell from whats on the back, everywhere is giving me the BS answer of "we don't stock for a capri"

its a 1.6 pinto

This is the closest I've found I'm assuming it will be the right one?

Do a search for Gates Fan belts

Here's a couple of links, just double check the details before you dive in, generally its the width & length that covers what you need.

thanks, funny you say about the gates belt, the first (and closest) company we called to where the car is now has that exact belt in stock and they told my other half it wasn't for a capri... told her they did a system "check" to see if it was compatible too... as soon as she told me I called BS it even shows up as compatible on their website.

such a ball ache thing to go right before xmas. I guess at least it wasn't my key splintering again this time haha

That's the size you need. I recently put an 10/11mmx865mm on my Cortina. You can even go a touch smaller 855mm

Incorrect...I put an 875mm on. I did buy an 865mm at the same time, because the old V-belt had 875mm on,but I couldn't tighten it up,as the adjustment bar was at it's limit. The 865mm is in the boot. Although is suitable

thanks I've managed to find one i just need to get back to the car now to fit it... at the moment i'll just be happy with it working so i can get the car home as right now it's sat almost 20miles away where i can't work on it... I'm just hoping nothing got damaged when the belt went

Nothing gets damaged, just the battery looses it's charge, and eventually won't get spark

to be fair bailers twine was an option... wasn't a thought on my mind though after losing light and not actually knowing why i was bellowing steam from the expansion tank.

But yeah new belt is now on and she is home where she should be and didn't feel like there was any real issue, heater might be working properly again now though haha

:D don't nobody buy synn's car , "full service history" an all that  .
The whole essence of classic car motoring/ownership is that you become at least moderately intimate with the car ( or whatever you think you look cool in ...truck ,bus , motorbike  ) and checking the fan belt is right there with knowing where the petrol goes in. The fact that you have now fitted a new belt suggests you have the skills required. Why not give it a bit of love ,before it leaves you stranded....again :)

not quite sure what you are implying but ok... I've done a fair amount of work myself and check often, just happened to be a random thing this time i had no tell tale squeaks and screeches from it, considering its the first time since i've owned it that it's broken down/I've stopped I don't think it's too bad of a deal :xd:

It`s the antipodean sense of humour I think, can be mis-interpreted. I hope so.

Hi , not trying to imply anything , just my opinion I guess . , Maybe I'm implying that I think that peeps who drive classic cars all know basic mechanics/ enough to keep their treasure drivable .....maybe some don't. I have always felt that part of the enjoyment of classic cars is fixing it yourself , and obviously others do too .....or we wouldn't have websites like this one where skills and info are shared ,( I see here ) peeps who live close by offering to meet and help out.
Try this :) .....how pleased with yourself would you have been if you gave the engine bay it's pre flight check and found that belt (hanging on by a thread or two :poke: ) before it broke somewhere away from home. Cleaning is another thing that has hidden benefits, and I don't mean throwin a bit of soapy water at the paint , I'm talking toothbrushing the engine bay and anything else that sees regular dirt.....you become very familiar with your treasure and anything out of the ordinary becomes quite obvious and you learn stuff .....like the leaking rack boot and the leaking sump gasket were actually oil dripping out of the fuel pump....when the car is parked it drips on the rack boot , when driving the wind flicks it up the side of the block.
Sure Ferrari's and Aston's ect are nice but how many of their owners know how to keep it sweet, I mean any (rich) Pratt can get a meggabuck car and drop it off for service......but I don't see how they can have pride in their joy........not like us 8-) .
Sometimes I say stuff just to get peeps thinkin.........surprizin what you can come up with when you think about stuff.

Antipodes ..... :?: I thought that was up near you guys
