An interesting matchup (forgive my American!):

There are two ways of looking at this and it probably depends on what you expect to happen.

1. The 25 year old Cosworth does well to nearly keep up with a brand new hot hatch.

2. The ST does well to outrun a homologation special with half a litre more engine capacity, an extra cylinder, a little more power and two more driven wheels.

For me, the ST does surprisingly well considering the advantages the Cosworth has over it (on paper at least). The use of technology to overcome these is quite impressive.

I know which one I’d rather have as a weekend toy though....

Give me the Escort Cosworth any time over a modern domestic appliance. Better still, give me a Sierra Cosworth.

No contest.
I can't see the Fiesta driver stepping out of the car with a smile on his/her face, I'm sure the Cosworth driver will be grinning from ear to ear.
