Just go to any tool supplier and buy a set of parallel punches. They're not expensive and you'll get at least half a dozen different punches. I have done this job countless times and have not experienced the issues you have.

On the subject of clocks, I take it that's your letter in this month's club magazine?

So I waited all week for these pins to arrive (from a reputable supplier!) as Martin suggested, first one was too big, bent, second one (1.6mm) perfect size, a gentle tap with a rubber mallet then bent it, tried to straighten it back out - snapped

I just can't catch a break!

I fell bad for starting the thread now, Danny!
I'm sure it will all come good though....

Can you post a photo of how far you've got? Maybe we might be able to see something that has been overlooked.

Sorry for the delay!
This is how far (or not as it may be) I've come

Good thing is that I've got my refund for my clearly defective pins, new set on order!
Bad thing is that no matter what I do my pictures decide that their all on the wonk

This is the sort of :turd: that happens pretty much everytime I try something like this

Maybe the roll pin is slightly bent therefore any amount of spray etc won't help.

Pics are ok when you click on them

Weird that they work when you click 'em??

Not a bad shout Andy, last resort is to cut the brass outer section off and weld it back up again but I'd really rather avoid that

It looks like the pin should come out easily from there..... :)
Have you tried gripping the protruding end?

Do you have a vice that you can squeeze it in to try and push the pin back the other way?

Not a bad shout, not thought of that!
I do have a small vice, not sure if we have a bigger one somewhere or not, if not by brother is a chippie so could always ask him if he has a bigger one!

Will give that a bash as well :)
New Stanley forged chrome vanadium steel pins have arrived so fingers crossed I start getting somewhere soon

You don't want the forged ones, you need genuine pins....
:goodluck: I hope they do the trick!

It worked! Got the drift pin, delicately tapped it with rubber mallet, the pin came more or less straight out
Obviously the first ones just must have been shit!!

Thanks for the suggestion from Martin to get proper pins, and also for offering to help with the parts if I couldn't make it work :)

I've been following this thread like a TV soap addict glued to the box awaiting Emmerdale's next instalment. So I'm pleased to see that piece of good news Danny :) You must be relieved.

Just glad to be done with this small saga so I can get stuck on step 2 instead of being stuck right at the start
