1987 2.8i Special

Post by Christoph2.8i »

Been on this site for years but haven’t ever actually posted any photos of my 2.8i. I bought it in 2005 am the 5th owner. I restored it after running it around for a few years. I have a full history file with the car inc all handbooks, MOT’s, details of the owners. It was originally sold to a gentlemen from Walter Burgess Ford in Keighley. I still have the dealership wallet. It was then sold on to the 2nd owner in Skipton, then moved to Nottingham then onto the lady I bought it from in Suffolk. Now she is residing in my Essex home for 14 years. All original apart from a 2inch exhaust system. Hope you like it.

Very nice Capri Chris. I went with the single colour too rather than the two tone original. Looked a great car to start with, nice job :applaud:

Thanks for the comments guys. Stuck with the original “Titan grey” colour, which is basically mercury grey I am told?

Here’s pic that shows the before and after, and an under the bonnet shot. 8-)

Yes, Titan Grau is what the Germans call the colour we know as Mercury Grey.

Mercury Grey is a nice colour, but there are around 5 different shades of it, so be careful if you need to repaint/touchup panels at anytime.

I’ll remember that if I need to get more paint. Have a bit left over from the re spray so should be good.

Has anyone ever tackled changing the seals in their steering racks? I had a leak from the rack so decided to tackle it last year. Was a pain in the backside but I learnt a lot about the steering on the capri and ultimately fixed the leak on the rack. Seal kit was about £40. Had to make a new metal seal as I had to damage it to get it out:

I'd certainly be interested in hearing more about this - I'm trying to strip the rack on my 3L, whoever sprayed it matt black decided to spray every-bloody-thing matt black while in situ so I can't get one of the pipes out, and I also need to strip it back as much as possible

Hi,
It's quite a brave thing that you're doing here! I see that you have the Ford Workshop Manual, and it's the list of required specialist equipment that put me off attempting to refurbish my rack a few years ago. Luckily for me, Delco-Remy could still supply refurbished racks, so a replacement only cost me £115 at Eurocarparts. Unfortunately, I think even CCI are running low on core units to refurbish, so they require your rack in advance to refurbish that. That's fine, but it could mean that your car will be off the road for weeks.
Anyway, :goodluck: and please keep us updated!

Andrew.

So I done this last year and it’s been back on the car for about a year. I haven’t done many miles in it but haven’t had any issues - (no more leaks).

It was certainty a big task. Taking it off was a pain and stripping it down and carefully replacing the seals, making sure everything was super clean was also tricky. You don’t really need any specific tools apart from one to remove a metal seal - I had to damage the seal to get it out. I made a tool to remove it and then my dad (being a toolmaker by trade) made a replacement seal. You can see the replacement in the photos.

You also have to balance the rack once it is on, there are instructions on how to do this.

I still have PDF copies of the workshop manual for the rack somewhere. So if you need it, PM me and I can send them across.
