Electric aerial problem.

Post by Allan mcl »

Electric aerial won't go up or down, I can hear the motor running both ways but nothing happens. Is there any way to repair it as it is original.

Cheers Allan.

That’s done well I had two new ones on my old Capri back in the late 80s as they seemed to only last a few years .
I think she may have given up the ghost .

If it's already broken there's no harm in taking it apart to have a look. I expect something inside like a plastic gear has worn.

Car coming off the road at the end of the month for the winter so this could be a good time to do those little jobs.

As Andrew suggests, there`s a steel worm gear from the motor which drives a nylon `ring gear` around the cable drive drum. This wears out at the parking position, there is a clutch on the aerial drive drum which when aerial stops cos it`s fully extended, the clutch allows the drum to keep turning to the parking position - but this puts a LOT of stress on the nylon teeth! The clutch assy is very, very tight: If you can replace with an OE one, it`s worth loosening the nut which tensions the clutch assembly so there IS enough tension to drive the aerial up but it`s not over straining the nylon teeth on ring gear. Will last for decades then.

I've had the exact same problem - just taken mine off to have a look at it but not had the chance yet.
I'd imagine replacing the whole unit will be easier though, can't be bothered pulling it apart for a tiny fiddly gear

My aerial has a mind off its own.. It goes up OK but comes down only when it wants to. Sometimes its pretty much straight away, sometimes after a min or too and sometimes I just leave it, come back later and it's down

Dont bother me as it actually gives B112 a bit of attitude I find rather endearing

So are you saying “ when it’s up it’s up “ and “ when it’s down it’s down “ but when it’s half up it’s not up or down ?
