Finally my first ever Capri! 1987 2.8i Special

Post by Gjc »

Afternoon all,

I see this car has already been owned by another use on this site, though now inactive. Got this a couple of weeks ago and then immediately went on holiday, got back yesterday and just want to drive it but has a couple of issues.

First of all when starting the car it hunts at idle, very annoying. Once the car has warmed up all is well but you have to sit and occasionally give a little throttle as it sometimes just drops too few revs and cuts out. Obviously when I’ve tried to drive it like this, it has coughed and spluttered and then tried to cut out when coming to a stop. Are there any particularly common causes of this and somewhere for me to start looking? This is my first Capri, in fact my first Ford so I’m coming at this as a bit of a virgin!

Second issue is the brakes are shocking. It has big brakes on the front FWIW. When braking you can see bubbles in the brake master cylinder reservoir so presumably there is air in the system which requires bleeding. What would be the recommended way of doing this on a Capri? Bleed order etc.

Overall the car is in good condition, the rest of it mechanically looks fine and the bodywork is pretty solid with just a couple of signs of previous rust repair and a few scratches that I will try to tidy up.

I’ve made an album on imgur which has a few photos and a couple of videos of the car hunting.

Hi,
Welcome to the forum! :welcome:
That is one great looking Capri you've bought yourself there.
For troubleshooting issues with the 2.8's fuel system, I highly recommend reading this article by the CCI technical consultant Ian Coulson.

For bleeding the brakes, I use Gunson's Eezibleed. It makes one man bleeding of the brakes a doddle.
A lot of people suggest bleeding the brakes from the furthest nipple away from the master cylinder towards the nearest, although the Haynes manual contradicts this. I've tried it both ways and it doesn't seem to make any difference.
:goodluck:

As said above, a nice looking car :)

On starting Andrew has posted a good guide but I would start with the warm up regulator. If you are lucky there will just be a build up of crud in the gauze filter under the larger banjo connection. More fuel should flow through here when the engine is cold and then a valve effectively closes the circuit once the engine is warm and the problem therefore becomes less of an issue.

Your brakes might have air in the system but even so it should not bubble back in to the master cylinder. I would suspect the master cylinder seals are on the way out and a new cylinder will be necessary. Bleed the brakes first as it is a cheaper option but I doubt it ill help a lot.

Thanks for the welcomes guys.

Luckily I have purchased a new master cylinder just in case this is the issue with the brakes.

The hunting issue is a weird one, most of the time it starts to hunt almost straight away on startup, but now and again it will start up fine and not hunt at all. Most annoying. I just want to get in it and drive! 🤣

Just a thought but, re. your other brake problem possibly being a servo issue: a leaking vac. hose could not only mean no servo , but also an air leak causing poor runming.

Yeah having had a couple of discussions with a few people on Facebook etc a lot of them are also suggesting the servo. The problem I’m having is finding a replacement one!

There are a number of specialist suppliers, Capri Gear for example, who can source most parts that you may not be able to get from factors etc.

I know the square root of naff all about 2.8s but worth checking for vac leaks, had a similar issue myself in the past and this was it.

A recommendation I'd like to give for brake bleeding is this -

Very cheap price and made the job very easy and worked very well, surprisingly so.
