Prolblem with my Capri 2.0 pinto
Hi Guys can anyone help me as ive be struggling with my lovely 1986 Capri 2lite laser for 12 months .
When after about 15 mins or so when it gets up too temp it breaks down and will not start up agai until she cools down .
Ive changed
The coil
The fuel pump
The condensor
All the plugs
The rotar arm
The points
Still she breaks down and appears to start misfiiring and getting abit too warm just before she coughs to a stop .

sounds like tight valves have you adjusted them also if your head has not been converted to unleaded this can cause the problem with the valves .

Re: Prolblem with my Capri 2.0 pinto
Only thing I can think that you`ve not changed is the ballast resistor wire. I assume this will warm up in use, expand, and after a certain time could go open circuit. You can get 1.6ohm ballast resistors on ebay for a couple of quid, worth wiring the coil via one of them as an experiment? Cannot think of a single thing you`ve not tried apart from that. Earths? Distributor to engine; engine to chassis etc?,

Re: Prolblem with my Capri 2.0 pinto
Check the coil is getting the correct voltage via the ballast resister rather than the full 12 volts as that would overheat the standard 8 volt coil.
Check the small gauze filter in the inlet to the carb
Check the float needle valve works correctly and that the float does not have a pinhole leak.

Re: Prolblem with my Capri 2.0 pinto
Ive checked the ballast resister in the wiring loom by wiring positive coil direct to battery . Still broke down !
Re: Prolblem with my Capri 2.0 pinto
Sorry guys had my carb fully refurbed too . Done by Weber service . Still had same problem

Re: Prolblem with my Capri 2.0 pinto
Thats a bypass, not a check. A check would be measuring the actual voltage preferably when the car is running, that way you can see if the voltage suddenly changes just as the engine stops.

Its worth eliminating the tank and fuel line as possibles. Can you hook up a temporary fuel line from a gallon petrol can to the fuel pump.
Re: Prolblem with my Capri 2.0 pinto
Its had a new fuel tank and as a inline fuel filter on it and never as no fuel storage

I know you've fitted a fresh condenser, but I read a similar thread a while ago where a new condenser was faulty - many newer parts being of inferior quality - and failed when hot.

When it conks out it might be worth removing the fuel pump and checking that the push rod that operates the pump still moves freely and isn't binding

You haven't mentioned the dissy cap. I would certainly change that. I had an issue similar to yours, changed loads of things as you have. But it was only when I changed the dissy cap and rotor arm that the fault went away.

Re: Prolblem with my Capri 2.0 pinto
When it’s in the conked out mode can you do a couple of tests on it, like testing for sparks at the plugs/ from the coil. Maybe a compression test, trying to eliminate an area of the fault.
Re: Prolblem with my Capri 2.0 pinto
Thanks guys for all advise yes i will change diss do test for spark
