The downside to cleaning!

Post by Peter-S »

The trouble with cleaning the car is that you tend to look at it a bit more closely. Then you find things. Like a spoiler that is really flexible at one endd as it has been quietly rusting from the inside out!

Which of course is not too good for the paintwork underneath :o

Guess I've got a bit more work on my hands then :(

 Oh dear.! A bit of autoglym super resin polish should see that sorted Peter.... hope this helps :)

But yep you are so right Peter. The number of times I have found botched and shortcuts with B112 when I was tidying the engine bay up close and personal... one simple job always seemed to lead me down a completely unexpected turning. Good luck with the repair mate

Very familiar with that look! The spoiler on the S is completely shagged and no-one beforehand seems to have realised/cared so has caused a world of problems underneath :(

Lucky for me the GL doesn't have a spoiler so one less thing to worry about!

Stick it back on for now Peter and pretend you didn't see it

Just one of the reasons why I will think of doing a job on the car, then jump in instead and zoom off for a drive :)

You seem to take it all in your stride Peter, I'm sure you will fix it up and will soon be all sorted.

I would just clean then treat the affected area with a rust gel and refit a spoiler :)

Peter, is that a bolt that`s broken off completely thats sticking out of the tailgate? One of those that go through the back with `plug` covers? I`d never even thought that that could be a problem :(

It's frightening to see what horrors may be lurking in the unseen areas...
It's a good thing that you spotted it now Peter, as it wouldn't be a good idea to leave rust like that untreated for much longer.
As Jason says, the area under the spoiler appears to be one of the worst water traps on the Capri. Might it be an idea to cover the paint and screw cavities under the spoiler with wax or grease to hopefully prevent any further deterioration?

Indeed it is Steve. Usually they just rust solid in the fitting, much like the screws on front indicators, but this time the rust spread from the spoiler :(

I think the problem in part is that the rubber on the underside of the spoiler does not always cover the whole of the metal structure within the spoiler and as the rain seems not to drain away freely it can corrode badly. In this case it spread to the tailgate too.
The spoiler is very flexible at one end now, the metal has completely dissolved

Just about perhaps Nige,

I ground the rust out which unfortunately had spread below the spoiler. Jenolite applied

ImageDSC_0057 by Peter Smith, on Flickr

Followed by a good coating of rust paint

ImageDSC_0059 by Peter Smith, on Flickr

Primed and rubbed down

ImageDSC_0061 by Peter Smith, on Flickr

Base coat which I tried to fade in with a small airbrush

ImageDSC_0062 by Peter Smith, on Flickr

and a coat of lacquer and a polish. Looks better in the picture than real life, depends how the light catches it but not too bad

Yep that's a brilliant repair Peter. Once the spoiler is back on the bigger picture will be even better. Great work mate... Now stop driving your Capris in the rain please

There's just a tiny little hardly noticeable spec of rust on my 2.0S, it was there when I bought it but you can't see it if you stand far enough away. Can you see if from where you are Peter?
