Obviously you can also open the throttle by hand whilst looking down the carb. You should see that squirt of fuel, assuming the carb isn't dry of course.

CapriFreak wrote: Fri Jul 05, 2019 10:10 am Cheers guys! Is there anyway to test the fuel pump? i'm wondering if this is going bad and not feeding petrol up to the carb? i guess adding this will test that but it does like to cut out randomly at times.
If you disconnect the fuel pipe from the carb and pop the end in to a jar and then crank the engine briefly you should get fuel in the jar. If you don't then the pump might have failed, the tank could be empty or you have a blockage in the pipe. If fuel does come through the pump is probably fine.

Also there is a small inline filter under the big brass nut where the fuel inlet pipe connects to the carb. Worth taking that out and checking it is not full of crud.

Ok so today i pulled off the pipe to the carb and had my glamorous assistant turn it over while i had the pipe in a jar... no fuel came out. She gave it a few cranks and nothing happened. Checked it twice to make sure. I'm assuming it would be pretty instant but then again the car has been sat for a couple of months now, also the tank definitely has a decent about of fuel unless its used a whole tank in 12 miles lol
I'm guessing replacing the fuel pump would be best at this point with an OEM one like this ?

The pump linked to looks fine, but before you replace that have you made sure the fuel pipes to the pump aren't blocked? I am assuming it was running OK recently.

I have not checked the line running from tank to fuel. If i pull that off should i expect to see fuel? and how best would you check they're clear? i dont have any compressors or anything yet.

It was running before and drove it briefly two months ago. It did like to cut out at lights a lot unless it had been running a while. Now it just cranks and cranks.

Before you say I have lost the plot again but I am sure there’s a pipe missing ? I keep looking at mine then your picture and can’t put my finger on it .
Peter is it me ?
Also I am sure that if the pump is not working you should be able to suck the pipe and get petrol up ?
Here’s my picture when I put a new pump on a few years ago .

interesting you mention the earth I've not moved any earths etc since working on the car but i've always thought its odd how my battery seems to be the other way round to most. I dont think my positive lead would reach that far either. Just noticed you earth strap above the dizzy. definitely missing that one.
Does the Battery Earth usually go to the Block? or is that a separate Earth strap?
Also do you have any more pics of the tubing on your carb, it would be interesting to see it from the front and side to compare. cheers for the help!

Just have to see if that solves the problem long term - could just be a case that it needed a bit of extra help to start and now it has run for a bit has cleared a small blockage or something?

I'm turning my attention to the Temp, Fuel & Oil gauges now as the dash is still apart so if i need to pull the clocks this would be a good time i guess.

My dials look like this when the ignition or car is on (Fuel rises from nothing to full, I have been keeping the tank full but when i got the car it wasnt full but still the same)

Well! it alive!!
IMG_2681.jpg
turns out the tank terminals were the wrong way around and the temp gauge works by grounding it! talking to Martin from Capri gear its must be wired wrong too so I might be able to save the temp sender unit once i correct it.

ordered the correct oil unit from Martin at the same time so fingers crossed by latest next week it'll all be working.

Added a inline filter pre carb too ( i know its missing a jubilee clip at the moment)

Update:

A bit gutted today as i swapped over the new temp sender unit and oil pipe union to replace the old electronic sender unit... I found out very quickly when i was at a set of lights why the oil presser union had been swapped... oil all over my feet and running down the dash. luckily i wasnt too far so was able to walk back and put the old unit back in. It made a right mess though and all i can smell in the car is oil now. i guess someone was using it as a blanking plug. The pressure seemed good though, the gauge was at half and when i gassed it went a little bit above half. I'm guessing this is better than being at the bottom haha!

The temp gauge still doesnt work but i also havent probably got the best connection on it yet as its only being held on the unit by one screw on the end. Sorry for the lack of pics !

Trying to figure out the lights but can't really understand what someone has done here. seems like they've spliced a blue/purple ( im colour blind) wire from the headlight relay to the front head lights. Then there are on both lights Red wires snipped off. Also the wire thats just snipped from the headlight relay must be going to something right?
IMG_2911.jpg
IMG_2911.jpg
Then on the passenger side there is a white wire that goes from the headlight all the way to the ignition.
IMG_2916.jpg
IMG_2915.jpg
The problem is no sidelights on the drivers front and rear... i get headlights but even with headlights on im missing the rear drivers side light.

I'm only about for today then away for a week and thinking about booking it into a garage to go through a couple of things. a bit fed up of not being able to use it now so might try and speed up the process a little.

Shame about the oil pressure, good it's at half! Not so good it's all over your feet

The wiring does look pretty fiddled with... Not sure why someone has wired it straight to the ignition though. Have you checked the terminals on the fuses on the headlight relay and have you tried using a multimeter/ammeter to test the current?

Where are you based? Might be easier to see in person if someone is relatively local to you

Cheers
Danny

That's a great condition interior, very nice!
What's the significance of the number 6 pool ball gearknob, instead of the usual 8 ball?

Andrew.

Thanks! It did come out of a gold 3.0 Ghia from a chap on this forum. It’s really nice with only a couple little rips and scuffs .
Number 6 was just a pool ball I found in a charity shop for £1 years ago and always wanted to make it into a gear stick. Think the white car and green go well though
