Ive got to decide whether to stick with a slightly noisy lsd or go to a standard diff.
How much difference does an lsd make to general handling ? Has anyone had experience of both who could say please ?
My 1983 5 speed 2.8i currently has an isd axle (presumably at one time sourced from a later car as it wasnt standard til the Injection Special in 1984.)
Though the diff works fine it has a transmission whine on acceleration and deceleration. Changing the lsd oil and the wheel bearings hasn't made a difference and everything points to wear and tear on the crownwheel. I want it quieter.
The choices seem to be:
A. Find a transmission specialist to rebuild the existing diff - sounds easy enough but actually trying to get someone to call me back with an indicative pricing hasn't proved easy or
B. Buy a good 2nd hand non lsd axle from Martin, Caprigear.
For A:
Potential ability to just drop the car off, collect it all done. Preserve lsd capability (not that it would have been standard).
Against A:
Dealing with someone I dont know. Could be bloody expensive. Have to fit in with their timescales to drop it off & collect (which can be difficult with work)
For B:
Its from Martin, he knows the car its from. Value for money. I can choose when to fit it. Standard spec for the age of car.
Against B:
Fit it (bolt to prop, shocks, springs, brakes, diff oil etc). Oil on the drive may annoy the wife. Its not an lsd (but does this matter)
Your thoughts please ?
From lsd to standard diff ?

Am i right in thinking an lad doesn't make much difference to handling except when driving on gravel or snow ?

I could have had a lsd in mine, but wanted to keep it standard for the A reg.

Personal opinion...don't believe the LSD hype. Never had a problem on the track without one in the Rat. For normal road driving it's seems to be overkill. Everyone likes to kick the back out a bit occasionally when coming off a roundabout, much harder to do with LSD, you need to push it harder so more chance of going too far and losing it.
