Is it the only "classic" that's 50 this year?Fordoholic Nick wrote:The 50th year of the Capri
It's going to be a great year and I look forward to catching up with forum members at the various events throughout the year, but most likely at the CCI Nationals and Brooklands.

As in the only classic model that's celebrating 50 years this year, Andrew ? If you are meaning this - there is another.Andrew 2.8i wrote:Is it the only "classic" that's 50 this year?Fordoholic Nick wrote:The 50th year of the Capri
The Austin Maxi!!!!
Hey, don't laugh! It is. It's really 50 years old since the 5 speed, 5 door hatchback in a mainstream motor was launched.
I'm taking the Capri to a few Maxi events to help them celebrate all of those years.........erm......sorry..........got as little distracted with a tear in the eye for all of those Maxi's that have gone to the graveyard.........I am going to help them celebrate the love of their motors. They asked for some assistance in this area and thought a Capri owner could help here.

Re: Hello 2019 !
The post wasn't really about which other cars are 50 this year but in addition to the Capri and the Maxi, the Renault 12 (which went on to be the first Dacia), that motorised armchair the Peugeot 504 and the then ground-breaking Fiat 128 were also introduced.
The 128 was ground - breaking as it was the first mass produced car to have transverse power unit with the clutch and gearbox bolted onto the side (rear) of the engine and using unequal length driveshafts for the front wheel drive. This is the way almost all of today's cars are still layed out. All previous FWD cars had had inline engine with engine in front of or behind the gearbox or transverse with the gearbox in the engine's sump.
I am biased as my mum had a 128 when I was learning to drive and it went like a rocket, but unfortunately rusted like one too.

Re: Hello 2019 !
Most Fiat 128s have aged much better than what I had in mind in my first post...….
It was a massive beast of a thing!
Andrew.
My friend's Dad had an estate 505. They had, unusually for the time, 3 rows of seats and seated 7/8 people.andyd wrote:I learnt how to drive in a X reg Peugeot 504

I would have thought that would have been a 505 by X-reg Andy. The last 504's, apart from the pick-up were sold in 78/79. Still a damn good car, we had one at work as a hack and it had done over 300,000 miles.
Modern Peugeots wouldn't hold a candle to one of those old ones.

Hi Paul,
I remember the reg numbers, NYB964V and XYC57X
His mate had the 305 and I always liked the look of the 505 at the time.

Re: Hello 2019 !
Good old Somerset registrations Andy. My dad worked in Burnham on Sea and his last car was a Merc 280SE, reg B600 VYD. Unfortunately he passed away in 1987.
Another major 50th birthday this year is the Queen of the Skies - the Boeing 747. I think this plane deserves a mention for making long distance flying affordable to everyone. I've flown on many and it's sad they are dying out now in favour of cramped smaller planes.

I like planes but hate flying! Many iconic things are coming to an end now....Watched (again) Guy Martin with the Vulcan final flight yesterday

Looking at a list like that and the pics you can see what style and appearance cars had back then, and don't they look great. And so many differences and chances taken, an exciting and vibrant time.ESSEXV6ESSEX wrote:Amazing. I wasn't around in 1969 but what a good year it was. Here is a list of cars :
