One For Peter-S
Hi Peter,
If you are ever in Pembrokeshire on holiday, Carew Cheriton airfield is well worth a visit as the control tower has been restored to wartime condition and now houses a small, but interesting, museum.
I popped in a few weeks ago but, sadly, couldn't stay for long.
Andrew.

Cheers Andrew,
I have a friend in Cardiff and mentioned it to him some while ago but has hasn't got there yet, despite being interested. He keeps saying he will do the flying boat base at Pembroke dock as well but he hasn't managed that either. I have visions of beating him to both at this rate
Good to know its worth a look though.

Nice to see that people are keeping building a live with the help it gave us during the war .
Always think it beats the National trust .
Perhaps we should start a new link with places to visit as there’s always times you say I wonder what that is like .

Popped back in to take some photos, however, they might not be very interesting as I wasn't sure what sort of thing you and your friend would want to see.
A quick background....Pembroke Dock played host to a flying boat and seaplane dock during the 1930s and 40s. This was the country's largest dock of it's kind.
The first thing that you will notice is that it's only a small museum that is based in the old (pre-RAF) chapel that is within the old dockyard. Numerous other buildings are still extant, but they are mostly used for commercial purposes, with the exception of the storehouse that was later a customs house and is now used by the border enforcement agency.
As you would imagine, the museum doesn't house any actual flying boats, however, they do have numerous scale models of both flying boats and regular boats that were built in the Pembroke Dock shipyard. Military shipbuilding in the dock commenced in 1814 and ceased in 1916, I think, because of the requirement for larger boats that could not fit in the small dock.
There is a full scale replca of a flying boat cockpit/bridge:
A photo of a flying boat and crew:
There are some exhibits of various parts (all that exists) of Pegasus engines. They also have a big propeller outside (no photo).
By all accounts, there is a flying boat shipwrecked within the dock. However, it is too difficult to recover it as the ferry operations (four a day) cannot be disturbed. However, divers have managed to retrieve one of the guns:
The rest of it is typical museum stuff. Mannequins dressed in period uniform and loads of genuine artefacts from the boats.
All in all, it's quite an interesting little museum and worth a visit if you are in the area. If anybody is totally ignorant of the existence of flying boats ( I must admit that I was ) they will find it quite an eye opener!
Cheers,
Andrew.

I have had a look at Peter's website too. I'm not particularly into avaiation but I do enjoy looking at the old abandoned airfield buildings that still survive. It's amazing how many wartime airfields there were scattered around the country.Jasonmarie wrote:Looks great I do like the war history and must say I did enjoys peter s Web Site full of information

I'd heard about the harbour wreck but I hadn't seen the reason why nothing has happened on the recovery front. Sounds to me like someone has their priorities wrong

That flying boat cockpit looks a tad simpler than that of a modern airbus!

The flying boat has only got a few more dials and gauges than a Capri!
